A fine example of the commitment of the Volvo brand to the integration of conventional rear-wheel-drive, modern engineering, and luxury sophistication is the Volvo 960, first presented in 1991 as the new flagship in the executive segment. The Volvo 960 was available as either a sedan or an estate with a 2,770 mm wheelbase and a length of 4,844–4,871 mm (when not restrained), a width of 1,750–1,760 mm and a height of 1,410 mm (sedan model) to 1,435 mm (wagon model) with heights as much as 1,438 mm at the wagon's rear where it rested on the bumper. The Volvo 960 came with only Volvo modular all-aluminum inline-six whiteblock engines (such as 2.5L and 3.0L DOHC) like those in the 940, unlike the earlier model's four-cylinder redblock mainstream engines. There were also early models that offered a 2.4L turbo. Transmission options were 4-speed automatics and manual transmissions, but larger engines usually had an automatic-only offering. One major upgrade was the 1995 revision featuring the rear suspension of all models that contained self-leveling software and even in some models, a composite transverse leaf spring to enhance handling and user comfort. This scientist became better when compared to the previous system that was found in limited vehicles in early sedans. Also, differentiating the 960 was high-end interior features, additional sound insulation, and a visual freshening of the car in 1994 that further highlighted the Volvo 960.
