Volvo 960 Throttle Body

The Volvo 960 Throttle Body is a device that allows the engine to take in air appropriately through the regulation of the air flow that moves through the filter and into the intake manifold. It sits between the air cleaner and manifold, with a butterfly plate that rotates with the accelerator movement, and sensors are applied to feed the powertrain computer to ensure that the fuel injectors correspond to the incoming air, to ensure optimal power and clean emissions. Initial versions of the early 960s were based on a cable-controlled TBI unit, a self-contained unit of Throttle Body injection that mounted one or two injectors above the plate and provided easy starts, better mileage and reduced exhaust pollutants. The model was changed in such a way that eventually fuel delivery was no longer linked to the air valve, and thus the second-generation Volvo assembly was just concerned with airflow and an idle air control bypass kept idle steady with an idle air control sensor that reported plate angle. Later years applied an electronic Throttle Body with drive-by-wire, replacing the mechanical cable with an electric motor that could be modulated by the computer, and this gave the opportunity of combining this with traction and stability control features and eliminated the concern of sticky linkages. In all versions the Volvo 960 unit has the same mission, but the primary variations are in the route of fuel to the cylinders and control of the plate, which is replaced by isolated injectors and smart electric actuation by integrated injectors and cables. Idle vibration may be due to wear at the shaft or carbon accumulation, but a quick brush-up or sensor replacement usually gets the Volvo models operating again with a sharp response.

Volvo 960 Throttle Body Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a throttle body on Volvo 960?
    A:
In order to remove the throttle body you will first need to disconnect the negative battery cable then the throttle pulley cover if equipped, then the throttle body to air cleaner hose. Next, remove the connection of the throttle pulley and the throttle body, if applicable, and remove the throttle cable from the throttle body. Proceed to remove any required hoses and remove the connector from the Throttle Position sensor. Remove the four retaining bolts fixing the throttle body to the intake manifold and remove the throttle body from the intake manifold. For installation, if replacing the throttle body, the TP sensor should be attached to the new throttle body before putting it onto the intake manifold. Clean the mounting surfaces of both the intake manifold and the throttle body thoroughly then install a new gasket to the throttle body and position that onto the intake manifold. Tighten the retaining bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm), reconnect the TP sensor connector and attach the throttle cable to the throttle body. Reinstall the connection between the throttle pulley and the throttle body if so equipped, followed by any hoses that were removed, the throttle body to air cleaner hose and finally, the throttle pulley cover. Conclude by replacing the negative battery cable.
