Volvo 960 Oil Pan

Volvo 960 Oil Pan is the under-engine oil tank that holds the lubricating oil to ensure that the straight-six powerplant will have a consistent supply at all times during each startup, cruise, or quick acceleration. The majority of vehicles are based on a wet sump configuration, and the Volvo flagship is no different, and it has the Oil Pan straight under the block where gravity causes the warm oil to reside, and then the pump pulls it back through the passages. The baffles prevent slosh inside so that when sharp corners are reached the pump will not draw in air, which is a very important protection because even a few seconds of starvation will put scratches on the bearings. Design has ensured that the ground clearance and capacity of the design match, ensuring that the engine is raised slightly higher to accommodate the sump even though it still clears the urban day-to-day speed bumps. There are two rudimentary lubrication schemes, wet and dry sump. To reduce height and ensure pressure during extreme g-forces, exotic racing cars use a dry sump with a separate scavenge pump and remote tank, but the reliable wet sump employed on the 960 keeps the parts count low, weight low, and service simple. Through years of production, the Oil Pan style remained the same, i.e., replacement parts are compatible with early and late models without various complicated swap-ons. The Volvo reservoir avoids leakage that may cause a reduction in pressure by ensuring that the joint is sealed with a durable gasket to eliminate leakage and ensure that the reservoir is long-lasting and allows the owners to check the state of the oil each time the drain interval is reached. The Volvo design is a reliable provider of hassle-free service.

Volvo 960 Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Oil Pan components on Volvo 960?
    A:
To remove and install parts for the 2.3L 4-Cylinder and 2.9L 6-Cylinder engines, begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable and safely raising the vehicle. Drain the engine oil and remove the splash guard if a vehicle has one. For 2.3L engines, remove the engine mount retaining nuts, the tower bolting and loosen the top bolt on the steering column yoke before sliding the yoke assembly up on the steering shaft. Raise and support the front of the engine, and remove the retaining bolts for the front axle crossmember and the crossmember itself. Next, remove the left engine mount, pan support bracket and pan bolts to remove the pan. Clean thoroughly the gasket mating surfaces, and mount oil pan together with new gaskets, and tighten bolts in crisscross fashion to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm). Lower the engine, install all engine mounts, and the front crossmember with its bolts. For 2.3L engines, remove the yoke assembly from the steering shaft and re-install it, tightening the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). re-install the splash guard if applicable drop the car lower down reconnect the negative battery cable fill the engine with oil start the engine let it run until operating temperature check for leaks. For the 2.8L 8-Cylinder engine, disconnect the negative battery cable, raise and support the vehicle, remove the splash guard, drain the crankcase and remove the oil pan retaining bolts before swiveling the pan past the stabilizing bar to remove it. Clean the gasket mating surfaces, install the oil pan with a new gasket, tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern to 6-8 ft. lbs. (8-11 Nm). Reinstall the splash guard, lower the vehicle, fill the crankcase with oil, attach the negative battery cable, start the engine, let it warm up to operating temperature and check for leaks. For the 2.3L and 2.4L 5-Cylinder engines, with the engine removed, remove the oil filter and oil pan bolts, carefully banging on the oil pan to break the seal and remove it and the oil passage O-rings. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and oil pan, coat new oil passage O-rings with engine oil and fit them in the cylinder block, apply a thin coat of gasket sealant on the engine block, fit the oil pan and pan bolts, tighten the pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 12 ft. lbs. (17 Nm) and finally fit the oil filter.
