With the strut taken off of the car, clean off all external dirt and place it upright in a vice. Fit spring compressor and compress coil spring until tension is removed from spring seats. Remove the dust cap from the centre of the upper mounting and unscrew the shock absorber piston nut, using a peg spanner to keep the piston from rotating if necessary. Lift the upper mounting, the upper spring seat and spring rubber, and then take off the coil spring (be sure to note its direction) and remove the bump stop and dust sleeve from the piston of the shock absorber. Inspect the shock absorber for any leakage of the fluid, the piston for any pitting, and the shock body for any damage. Test the operation of the shock absorber by making the piston operate in full and short strokes, it should be a smooth and continuous resistance; otherwise, it will be jerky and uneven, then it needs renewal, and shock absorbers need to be renewed in pairs. Inspect all other parts for damage or deterioration and renew suspect parts and if the upper mounting bearing is worn the complete mounting assembly has to be replaced. Clip the dust sleeve onto the bump stop, lubricate with petroleum jelly and fit to the piston. Refit the coil spring to the strut base with the flatter surface on the top, with the end of the coil spring fitted against the spring seat stop. Fasten the spring rubber and upper spring seat at the top of the coil spring. For all models other than later Sport models or Dynamic models, make sure the spring seat holes are aligned with the three bolts on the strut lower spring seat. For 2000-on Sport or Dynamic models, rotate the reference hole in the upper spring seat clockwise to sit at 20deg to corresponding bolt in the lower spring seat, rotate both left and right hand strut upper seats clockwise. Make sure that the spring seat is properly engaged on the strut piston afterwards, re-fit the upper mounting assembly and screw on the piston nut holding the spring seat and tightening the piston nut to set torque. Make sure the coil spring lower end is in contact with the spring seat stop and the upper and lower seats are aligned before carefully releasing the spring compressor and removing it from the strut before refitting the strut to the car.
