Volvo 960 Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the front shock absorber on Volvo 960?
    A:
To remove and install the strut for the 240, 700, 900, S90, and V90 Series, first raise and safely support the vehicle, then remove the wheel and disconnect the tie rod end. Place a floor jack under the Control Arm, disconnect the sway bar link, unbolt the brake lines from the bracket, and detach them from the clips. Remove the cover over the strut nut, disconnect the coil wire, and hold the strut shaft with tool 5037 while loosening the nut with tool 5036. Mark the position of the upper mount in the housing, remove the nuts and washers, carefully lower the jack, and pull the strut and spring out. For installation, guide the strut assembly into the body, install the upper mount according to the earlier marking, and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. Tighten the strut nut to 111 ft. lbs. using socket 5036 and holder 5037, press the nut cover back on, and connect the coil wire. Install the sway bar link, ensuring the distance between the washers is 1.65 in., then install the brake line bracket and clips, making sure the brake lines are correctly positioned in the wheelwell, followed by the tie rod end and wheel. Finally, lower the vehicle and test. For the 850, C70, S70, and V70 Series, raise and safely support the vehicle, remove the wheel, disconnect the sway bar link from the strut, and remove the ABS sensor lead from the strut and brake bracket without disconnecting it. Install support tool 5466 under the control arm, remove the two nuts and bolts holding the strut to the Steering Knuckle, and the upper nuts attaching the strut to the body, then remove the spring and strut assembly. For installation, place the spring and strut assembly in the spring housing, fasten it with new nuts tightened to 18 ft. lbs., connect the strut to the steering knuckle with new bolts and nuts tightened to 48 ft. lbs. and angle tightened 90°, connect the sway bar to the strut with new nuts, install the ABS sensor lead, remove the support tool, install the wheel, and lower the vehicle. For overhaul, a coil spring compressor is required to remove the spring safely. For the 240, 700, 900, S90, and V90 Series, remove the strut from the vehicle, attach the spring compressor tool, compress the spring alternately until the strut is loose, hold the strut shaft with tool 5037, and remove the nut with tool 5036, lifting off the upper mount, spring retainer, spring, and rubber bumper. For vehicles with gas pressure struts, the bumper is replaced by a rubber bellow and disc. Unscrew the retaining nut and pull the shock insert out of the casing using the appropriate tools. For installation, insert the strut insert into the housing, tighten the retaining nut to 111 ft. lbs., install the bumper or bellows and disc, install the spring with the compressor tool bolt holes facing upwards, install the upper mount, washer, and nut without fully tightening, remove the compressor while loosening the bolts alternately, ensuring the spring ends fit correctly, and install the strut in the vehicle. For the 850, C70, S70, and V70 Series, remove the strut from the vehicle, mount the spring and strut assembly in a vise, and secure it. Install the spring compressing tool and alternately compress the spring, then remove the bolt and washer from the strut attachment, followed by the strut nut. Remove the bearing dustcap and locknut, then the spring seat, bearing, rubber stopper, boot, and check for damage before removing the compressed spring. For installation, compress the spring to about 12 in., install the rubber stopper, washer, and compressed spring, then the spring seat and bearing, ensuring the spring ends are properly seated. Install the spring attachment, washer, and nut, tightening to 52 ft. lbs., slowly and alternately remove the spring compressor, and install the strut in the vehicle.
  • Q: How to remove and install rear shock absorbers on Volvo 960?
    A:
To change and install shock absorbers for different models of vehicles, you start by raising and supporting the vehicle safely. For models without 850, 960 Sedan and 1998 models, raise the rear suspension to unload the shock after which the lower nut and bolt holding the shock to the rear axle and then the upper shock absorber through-bolt. After removing old shock, install new shock in the upper mount, hand tighten through bolt and attach it using lower mount bolt and tighten to the specified torque values. For 1992-94 960 Sedan, make sure to align it correctly after removing the parts, take off the wheels, and remove the protective guard before unbolting the support arm and separating it from the wheel bearing housing. Support the arm while unloading the shock then remove the shock and spring assembly and install the new shock using specified torque settings. For the 1995-98 960/S90/V90 and AWD V70 Series, lift the rear, take off the wheel and unbolt the shock from the support arm and body and fit the new shock with fresh bolts. For the 850, C70, S70, and V70 (not AWD) Remove necessary interior panels so that you can reach the shock mounts, unload the shock, and replace it with proper torque on the upper mount. Testing the shock absorbers involves testing the shock absorbers to make sure that they are effectively dampening the motion, which can be done by pushing down on one of the corners of the vehicle and seeing how the body springs back up. Excessive motion or failure to settle are signs of poor function, while oil leakage may be a sign of failure. It is recommended that the shocks be replaced in pairs to ensure balance of handling.
