With the strut removed from the car, wash away any dirt from the outside and mount it vertically in a vice. Fit spring compressor and compress coil spring until tension is relieved from spring seats. Whilst holding the piston with a suitable Allen key or spanner slacken the shock absorber piston nut and remove the piston nut and washer, mounting plate assembly and spring rubber. Remove the coil spring by lifting and slide the dust cover from the piston. Examine the shock absorber for signs of fluid leakage, and check the piston for pitting along its entire length, and check the shock body for damage. While holding it upright test the operation of the shock absorber by moving the piston through a full stroke and then through short strokes of 50, 10 and 100 mm; there should be smooth and continuous resistance. If the resistance is jerky or uneven if there are visible signs of wear or damage, the renewal of the shock absorbers is necessary, which must be renewed in pairs. Inspect all other parts for any signs of damage or deterioration and replace any that are suspect. Maximize on the piston rod and slide on the dust cover. Refit the coil spring, taking care for the spring end to abut the spring seat stop. Fit the spring rubber to the top of the spring, and then refit the upper mounting and washer. Screw in the new piston nut and tighten to specified torque. Make sure that all of the components are properly positioned, and then carefully release the spring compressor and remove it from the strut. Make sure the bottom of the spring is tight on the stop and the rubber of the spring is parallel with the top mounting then re-fit the strut.
