Volvo V40 Wheel Bearing

Volvo V40 Wheel Bearing provides satisfactory rotation that makes each wheel continue moving silently and securely along the road. Housed within the hub is a ring of hardened steel balls or tapered rollers which runs on a metal race to reduce friction, allowing steering to remain precise and tires to wear evenly. Volvo has over the years applied three hub and bearing layouts on the small V40. The common and the original design is a sealed unit hub assembly which occasionally contains an ABS sensor and comes as a complete unit to be replaced after it wears out. Its sealed nature keeps grease and contaminants where they belong, and the parts last a long time before they need to be replaced. A second type remains a unit, but on certain front-driven models the steering knuckle must be removed to allow the hub and bearing to be pushed out, and then replaced with new components, a procedure that enables the knuckle to be reused but makes the Wheel Bearing fit into place appropriately. Lastly, some non-driven rear axles are based on opposed, serviceable tapered roller bearings, where only the rollers and races can be changed, retaining the hub itself, again, a lighter type of repair which nevertheless brings tight control back. Whether a healthy Wheel Bearing or this one is installed, the ride is safeguarded, drag is minimal, and the wants of the Volvo owner are fulfilled by Volvo car.

Volvo V40 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and reassemble the swivel hub assembly on Wheel Bearing on Volvo V40?
    A:
Remove the swivel hub assembly and securely support it on blocks or in a vice. Using a tubular spacer that bears only on the inner end of the hub flange, press the hub flange out of the wheel bearing. If the wheel bearing's outboard inner race remains on the hub, remove it with a bearing puller. Lever out the oil seals and extract the bearing retaining circlip from the inner end of the swivel hub assembly. If necessary, refit the inner race back in position over the ball cage and securely support the inner face of the swivel hub. Using a tubular spacer that bears only on the inner race, press the complete wheel bearing assembly out of the swivel hub. Clean the hub and swivel hub thoroughly, removing all dirt and grease, and polish away any burrs or raised edges that might hinder reassembly. Check both for cracks or signs of wear or damage, renewing them if necessary, and replace the circlip regardless of its condition. During reassembly, apply a light film of oil to the wheel bearing outer race and hub flange shaft to aid installation. Securely support the swivel hub and locate the wheel bearing in the hub, pressing it fully into position with a tubular spacer that bears only on the wheel bearing outer race. Once the wheel bearing is correctly seated, secure it with the new circlip, ensuring it is correctly located in the groove in the swivel hub. Turn the swivel hub assembly over and press the new outer oil seal squarely into position, ensuring it is fully seated and lubricating its sealing lip with a smear of grease. Securely support the outer face of the hub flange and, taking care not to damage the oil seal, locate the swivel hub wheel bearing inner race over the end of the hub flange. Press the wheel bearing onto the hub using a tubular spacer that bears only on the inner race of the wheel bearing until it seats against the hub shoulder. Check that the hub flange rotates freely and wipe off any excess oil or grease. Pack the wheel bearing with grease, then press the new inner oil seal squarely into position before refitting the swivel hub assembly.
