Volvo V40 Trailing Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the trailing arm on Volvo V40?
    A:
To remove the trailing arm, start by removing the control link and undo the retaining screws or fasteners to remove the protective cover from the front of the trailing arm. Loosen the retaining nut or bolts of the handbrake cable from the brake caliper, then remove the cable from the trailing arm. Next, take off brake disc and disconnect the abs wheel sensor wiring connector, unclip the wiring so that to remove the wheel sensor with the trailing arm, if the new one with the new trailing arm, remove the sensor completely. If replacing the trailing arm, remove the hub assembly by loosening and removing the retaining bolts then remove the brake backplate and caliper mounting bracket from the arm. Support the lower arm and loosen and remove the nuts and pivot bolts holding the upper link and lower arm to the trailing arm. Loosen and remove the trailing arm to body front mounting bolt and remove the arm from the vehicle. For overhaul, thoroughly clean the trailing arm and surrounding area checking for cracks, distortion, or wear, especially the front pivot bush. If the replacement of the pivot bush is required, it is recommended to get help from a Volvo dealer or a garage with the appropriate hydraulic press and spacers. If equipped, press out the old bush and install the new one, making sure that it is centered. For refitting, place the arm and slightly tighten the front mounting bolt. Insert the pivot bolts for the upper link and lower arm on the trailing arm and fit new nuts and tighten lightly. If the case, reattach the brake caliper mounting bracket and backplate to the trailing arm, and tighten the retaining bolts to the recommended torque before refitting the hub assembly. Reconnect the rear wheel ABS sensor and wiring connector then re-install the brake disc and caliper Reconnect the handbrake cable to the trailing arm and caliper, adjusting the cable as necessary. Finally, reattach the control link and rock the car to settle the trailing arm and tighten the lower arm outer pivot bolt, upper link outer pivot bolt and the trailing arm front mounting bolt to the required torque values. After all bolts have been tightened, put the protective cover back on the under body of the car and check the rear wheel alignment.
