Volvo V40 Control Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear control arm on a rear suspension on Volvo V40?
    A:
Chock the front wheels and loosen the relevant rear wheel nuts before jacking up the rear of the car and securely supporting it on axle stands to remove the relevant roadwheel. Position a jack beneath the lower suspension arm and raise it until it just supports the weight of the arm. Clean the area around the control link-to-body pivot bolt and make alignment marks between the bolt eccentric washer and the body bracket for later use in preserving rear wheel alignment. Slacken and remove the two bolts securing the control link to the Trailing Arm, then unscrew the nut from the pivot bolt and remove the washer. Withdraw the pivot bolt and manoeuvre the control link out of position, noting that the eccentric washer is an integral part of the bolt. Inspect the link bushes for signs of damage or deterioration; if damaged, the complete link assembly must be renewed. To refit, manoeuvre the link into position and insert its trailing arm mounting bolts. Slide the link pivot bolt into position, ensuring correct location, and fit the washer and new nut to the bolt, tightening it lightly at this stage. Tighten the control link trailing arm bolts to the specified torque, then refit the roadwheel, lower the car to the ground, and tighten the wheel nuts to the specified torque. Rock the car to settle the rear suspension components in position, ensuring the previously made marks are correctly aligned before tightening the control link-to-body bolt to the specified torque. Finally, check the rear wheel alignment.
  • Q: How to remove and refit the control arm in a car suspension system on Volvo V40?
    A:
To remove the lower arm, first slacken and remove the nut which holds the anti-roll bar connecting link to the lower arm and then uncouple the link balljoint. Chock the front wheels and lift the rear end of the car using axle stands and supporting it before removing the relevant roadwheel. Clean area around lower arm to body pivot bolt and make alignment marks between the bolt eccentric washer and the body bracket for preserving rear wheel alignment during refitting. Next slacken and remove the nut and withdraw the suspension strut lower mounting bolt from the lower arm. Unscrewing the nut and withdrawing the outer pivot bolt that holds the lower arm to the Trailing Arm, unscrew the nut on the lower arm inner pivot bolt, remove the washer and withdraw the pivot bolt by maneuvering the lower arm out of the way, also the eccentric washer is integral to the bolt. For overhaul, clean thoroughly the lower arm and area checking for any cracks, distortion or wear, particularly the pivot bushes which may require a hydraulic press for renewal which is best done by a Volvo dealer or equipped garage. While refitting, maneuver the lower arm to position, slide the inner pivot bolt in, making sure the eccentric washer goes in the right place, and fit the washer and new nut, tightening lightly. Pass the strut through the lower arm, aligning it with the trailing arm and put the outer pivot bolt into it, fitting the new nut and tightening up lightly. Align the strut lower mounting with the lower arm and insert the mounting bolt aligned and fit the new nut with a light fitting. Refit the roadwheel and lower the car then tighten the wheel nuts to the specified torque. Rock the car to settle the rear suspension components and tighten the lower arm outer pivot bolt and the suspension strut lower mounting bolt to their specified torque settings taking care to make sure the previously made alignment marks are correct prior to tightening the lower arm inner pivot bolt. Finally, connect the anti-roll bar connecting link balljoint with the lower arm, install the new retaining nut and tighten it to the stipulated torque, and finally check the alignment of the rear wheels.
