To remove the strut from the car, start with removing it and prising off the plastic cap, and slacken the strut mounting nut half a turn while holding the protruding piece of the piston rod with a Torx bit, without removing the nut at this stage. Next, fit the spring compressors to the
Coil Springs, and tighten them until the load is removed from the spring seats. After this take off the piston nut, rubber washer and the special 'star' nut followed by the upper mounting, spring seat, spring, bump stop and gaiter. Once the strut assembly is fully disassembled, check all components for wear and damage or deformation and replace as needed. Check the shock absorber for fluid leakage and check the strut piston for pitting, test the operation of the shock absorber, moving the piston in full and small strokes, see if the resistance is smooth, continuous, if it is jerky, uneven operation, it needs to be renewed. If there are doubts about the condition of the coil spring, release the spring compressor gradually, observe whether there is distortion and cracking, and compare it with the new component for tension test, and replace it if damaged or distorted. Inspect all other components for damage or deterioration and renew any suspect components. If fitting a new shock absorber, hold it in the vertical position and pump the piston a few times to prime the shock. For reassembly, reverse the dismantling steps, taking care to fully compress the spring before fitting with the spring ends in the correct locations in upper and lower seats. Tighten 'star' nut, shock absorber piston retaining nut and strut mounting nuts to specifyed torque, Volvo tool No 999 5469 or a modified old socket to fit 'star' nut.
