- Q: How to remove and refit the rear sway bar on Volvo S80?A:To remove the component, chock the front wheels, raise the rear of the vehicle on a jack and place the vehicle on axle stands. Next, remove the exhaust system and unclip the cables from the handbrake from the clips on the subframe and tie-rod. Locate a jack under the outer end of the left-hand lower Control Arm and raise it sufficient to relieve the load on the Shock Absorber. Undo the right hand shock absorber lower mounting bolt and push the unit up in the coil spring. Then, undo the nuts which hold the outer ends of the sway bar together using a Torx bit (being careful to counterhold the nuts without damaging the rubber boots). After that, undo the bolts holding the sway bar clamps to the subframe, maneuver the sway bar to the right hand side past the disconnected shock absorber and withdraw the sway bar from the vehicle. For refitting, insert the sway bar from the right hand side, maneuvering the left hand side past the disconnected shock absorber making sure the handbrake cable sits above the sway bar. Fit and tighten the bolts which hold the sway bar clamps to the subframe. Use the jack to adjust the position of the lower control arm so that the bolts that hold the outer end of the sway bar and the bottom end of the shock absorber can be refitted and tightened to the specified torque. The rest of the process is the opposite reverse of removal.

Undo the bolts securing the subframe rear mounting brackets to the body and the bolts securing the rear mounting brackets to the subframe, recovering the washers as new bolts will be needed for refitting. Slacken the two subframe front mounting bolts slightly, lower the jack to allow the subframe to drop slightly at the rear, and ensure the steering rack mounting bolts are clear. Check that the crash guard does not trap the steering rack fluid pipes as the subframe is lowered. Undo the bolts securing the sway bar clamps on each side of the subframe and manipulate the sway bar out from under the car, withdrawing the steering rack crash guard as necessary. Examine the sway bar and connecting links for damage or deterioration. For refitting, manipulate the sway bar into position on the subframe along with the steering rack crash guard for right-hand-drive models, then refit and tighten the clamp bolts. Raise the subframe at the rear, engage the steering rack bolts, and refit the rear mounting brackets to the body, tightening the bolts hand-tight. Secure the rear mounting brackets to the subframe using the washers and new bolts, also tightened hand-tight. Move the jack to the front of the subframe, raise it to take the subframe weight, unscrew the front mounting bolts, fit new bolts, and tighten them hand-tight. Tighten the left-hand side subframe mounting bolts to the specified torque and angle, then do the same for the right-hand side, followed by tightening the mounting bracket-to-body bolts. Secure the steering rack with new nuts tightened to the specified torque, refit the steering rack crash guard nut and bolts for right-hand-drive models, and the steering rack fluid pipe retaining clip bolts. Finally, refit the engine undershield, connect the sway bar linking each side to the suspension struts, refit the roadwheels, lower the car, and tighten the wheel bolts in a diagonal sequence to the specified torque.
