To remove the strut, first you will need to remove it from the car. Slacken the piston nut one half turn while holding the protruding part of the piston rod in an Allen key, do not remove the nut yet. Fit spring compressors to the
Coil Springs and tighten up until the load is removed from the spring seats. After removing the piston nut, make alignment marks where the ends of the spring touch the upper and lower seat, discarding the nut for as a new one will be needed. Next, remove the upper mounting, spring seat, bump stop, gaiter and then the spring, taking care not to separate the spring seat from the mounting, in order not to lose the bearing balls. Once the strut assembly has been fully disassembled, examine all the components for wear, damage, or deformation, replacing any parts as required. Check for fluid leakage from the shock absorber and check for pitting of the strut piston, check for its operation by moving the piston through full and short strokes, the resistance should be smooth and continuous or should be renewed. If there are doubts about the condition of the coil spring, it must be slowly released, the spring compressor, and check the distortion and cracking, compared with a new one to know the tension of the coil spring, and replace it if it is damaged. Inspect all other components for damage or deterioration and renew suspect components. When fitting a new shock absorber, hold it vertically and pump the piston a few times to prime the shock absorber. For reassembly the dismantling procedure should be reversed, but take care to fully compress the spring before fitting it, the ends of the spring being correctly fitted in the upper and lower seats, aligning the marks made when removed and then tightening the new shock absorber piston retaining nut and strut mounting bolts to the specified torque.
