To remove the shock absorber on S70 models, by folding down the backrest of the rear seat, release the front edge of the carpet of the boot and remove the support panel underneath. Undo the backrest catch, the fasteners and remove the boot side trim panel to reach the upper mounting of the shock absorber. For C70 models, shifting carpet at the boot and removing the fasteners will remove the boot side trim panel to access. On models V70 undo retaining screws from the front floor panel of the luggage compartment at the front, pull the panel toward the back to release the mountings at the front and it can be removed. For all models, chock the front wheels, and jack up the rear of the vehicle through the axle stands (if the rear wheel is removed, the access will be better). Inside the luggage compartment, undo the two bolts, which secure the shock absorber upper mounting to the body. Position a jack underneath the spring seat on the suspension trailing arm and lift it to place the load off the shock absorber. Undo the shock absorber lower mounting nut and slide the unit off the tracking arm mounting stud. Remove the shock absorber with upper mounting from inside the luggage compartment. To undo the upper mounting, undo the centre retaining nut, counter holding the piston rod. Check the condition of the shock absorber and upper mounting, renewing any parts as necessary. For refitting, do the reverse, making sure to tighten all nuts and bolts to specified torques and angles.
