What should you be aware of before starting work on rear brake disc renewal and inspection on Volvo S40?

Before work commences, be aware of the dangers of asbestos dust. It is important to renew both discs at the same time if either one needs renewal, to ensure even and consistent braking and new brake pads should also be fitted. With the rear brake pads removed, the inspection procedures are the same as for the front brake disc. If not already done, remove the rear brake pads and support the brake caliper suitably or suspend it via string or wire from some convenient suspension component. Undo the two bolts mounted on the caliper mounting bracket and remove the mounting bracket. Remove the disc retaining clip and discard if fitted as it is only used during the production process. Mark the position of the disc relative to the hub then pull off the disc, tapping it with a soft-faced mallet if necessary to free it. To ensure a mating fit between the hub and disc, make absolutely sure that the mating faces are spotlessly clean - if a new disc has rustproofing compound on it, clean it off with some degreaser and a rag. Locate the disc on the hub with the orientation marks facing each other, and refit the brake caliper mounting bracket and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Refit the brake pads as well as adjust the handbrake.

How to effectively check and maintain the Brake Disc and Brake Pad Set on Volvo V40?

firmly apply the handbrake and undo the front wheel nuts, then jack the front end of the car up and rest it firmly on axle stands before removing the front roadwheels. For thorough check, remove and clean the brake pads and check the operation of the caliper and check the condition of the brake disc on both the sides. Any set of pads where any pad's friction material is worn to the specified thickness or less must be renewed as a set. After checking the front brakes, refit the front roadwheels, lower the car to the ground and tighten the roadwheel nuts to the specified torque. To repeat the check on the rear brakes, check the rear brakes, chock the front wheels, loosen the rear wheel nuts, jack up the rear of the car and support the car on axle stands before removing the rear roadwheels. On completion, refit roadwheels, lower car to floor and tighten rear roadwheel nuts to given torque.

Before work commences, be aware of the dangers of asbestos dust. It is important to renew both discs at the same time if either one needs renewal, to ensure even and consistent braking and new brake pads should also be fitted. With the rear brake pads removed, the inspection procedures are the same as for the front brake disc. If not already done, remove the rear brake pads and support the brake caliper suitably or suspend it via string or wire from some convenient suspension component. Undo the two bolts mounted on the caliper mounting bracket and remove the mounting bracket. Remove the disc retaining clip and discard if fitted as it is only used during the production process. Mark the position of the disc relative to the hub then pull off the disc, tapping it with a soft-faced mallet if necessary to free it. To ensure a mating fit between the hub and disc, make absolutely sure that the mating faces are spotlessly clean - if a new disc has rustproofing compound on it, clean it off with some degreaser and a rag. Locate the disc on the hub with the orientation marks facing each other, and refit the brake caliper mounting bracket and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Refit the brake pads as well as adjust the handbrake.

firmly apply the handbrake and undo the front wheel nuts, then jack the front end of the car up and rest it firmly on axle stands before removing the front roadwheels. For thorough check, remove and clean the brake pads and check the operation of the caliper and check the condition of the brake disc on both the sides. Any set of pads where any pad's friction material is worn to the specified thickness or less must be renewed as a set. After checking the front brakes, refit the front roadwheels, lower the car to the ground and tighten the roadwheel nuts to the specified torque. To repeat the check on the rear brakes, check the rear brakes, chock the front wheels, loosen the rear wheel nuts, jack up the rear of the car and support the car on axle stands before removing the rear roadwheels. On completion, refit roadwheels, lower car to floor and tighten rear roadwheel nuts to given torque.
