Before you begin work be aware of the dangers of asbestos dust. If one of the discs needs renewal, it is advisable to renew both of them at the same time so that the braking is even and consistent and new brake pads are fitted. With the rear brake pads removed the inspection techniques are the same as for the front brake disc and the condition of the handbrake drums should be checked after they are removed. Refinishing, run-out and out-of-round limits are specified, from which it can be seen that the drums are unlikely to wear unless the handbrake is frequently operated to stop the car. Start by removing the rear brake pads if not already done, then release the
Brake Caliper pipe from the retaining clip on the suspension trailing arm, if working on the left hand caliper undo the brake pipe three-way connector mounting bolt. Next, reverse the two caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper without putting strain on the brake pipe, making sure to support or suspend the pipe. Unscrew the wheel locating spigot pin from the disc, make a mark on the position of the disc with respect to the hub, and pull off the disc if necessary, using a soft-faced mallet. If the disc binds on the handbrake shoes, raise the armrest of the center console and carefully remove the rectangular cover panel from the base of the console. Through the aperture in the cover panel, use a cranked hexagonal key to turn the adjuster bolt on the rear of the handbrake lever until there is slack in the handbrake cables. Turn the rear brake disc until the handbrake adjustment hole is over the handbrake shoe internal adjuster wheel, insert a screwdriver into the hole and turn the adjuster wheel as required to back off the handbrake shoes. For refitting make sure that the hub and disc mating faces are clean, and clean any rustproofing compound off a new disc using methylated spirit and a rag. Locate the disc on the hub with the orientation marks aligned then refit the retaining spigot pin. Refit the brake caliper and tighten the new bolts to the specified torque, ensure the brake pipe is secure in the support clips or refit the three-way connector bolt as appropriate. Finally, refit and adjust the brake pads and adjust the handbrake.
