To remove the handbrake cable, first loosen the rear wheel bolts and chock the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the car and take it to axle stands before removing the rear roadwheels. Next, remove the centre console, rear seat and carpets as required to gain access to the cable entry on the floorplan. Make sure the handbrake is pulled out, and slacken the handbrake adjuster bolt at the back of the lever until there is slack in the cables. Extract the circlip and pull the handbrake cable operating segment from the handbrake lever shaft (disconnecting the handbrake inner cable end piece from the segment). Drill out the rivet holding the handbrake cable to the suspension trailing arm on each side, and undo the screw to release the cable support bracket from the trailing arm mounting just forwards of the rear wheel arch. At each handbrake outer cable end, twist the cable plastic guide sleeve back and forth to make it free from the stub axle, and slide the cable end piece out of the handbrake shoe expander sleeve to disconnect the inner cable from the handbrake shoe expander. Release any remaining cable clips and pull the cable out from inside the car. For refitting, hook up the end of the inner cable to the handbrake shoe expander and pull it all the way into place to lock it up in the expander sleeve. Push the guide sleeve back into position on the stub axle, feed the cable through to the inside of the car and reconnect the inner cable end to the handbrake lever segment, engaging the segment with the handbrake lever mechanism and fixing it with the circlip. Refit the cable support bracket up to the trailing arm mounting and attach the cable to the suspension trailing arm using a new pop rivet or alternatively using a suitable cable tie or self tacking screw. Refit any cable clips left over, then reinstalled the centre console, rear seat and carpets. Finally, turn the handbrake on and off two or three times to settle the cable down and adjust the handbrake accordingly.
