To reduce the amount of fluid loss, unscrew the master cylinder reservoir filler cap and put polythene over the filler neck, securing it with an elastic band to provide an airtight seal. Alternatively, use of a brake hose clamp or similar device to clamp the flexible hydraulic hose on the rear. Remove the rear brake pads and clean the area around the hydraulic union on the caliper before undoing the pipe union and be prepared for fluid spillage and plugging or capping the open unions. Undo the two retaining bolts and remove the caliper (remember that you'll need new bolts when you refit). The procedure to overhaul is similar to the front caliper, however, do not try to separate the caliper halves to remove the pistons. For refitting, fit the caliper over the disc and attach it to the stub axle bracket using two new bolts with the bolts being tightened to the specified torque. Refit the brake pipe to the caliper and screw the union firmly back, and fit the brake pads back in. Remove the brake hose clamp or polythene, if used, and bleed the hydraulic system. To fit the roadwheel apply the footbrake two or three times to settle the pads then refit the roadwheel and drop the car, tightening the bolts on the wheel in a diagonal sequence to the specified torque.

  Before beginning work, know about the risks of hydraulic fluid and asbestos dust. Start by setting the handbrake and chocking the rear wheels. Loosen the bolts at the front of the wheel, raise the front of the car using a jack and rest it on some axle stands and remove the roadwheel from the car. In order to provide a minimum fluid loss, unscrew the filler cap on the master cylinder reservoir, cover the filler neck with polythene and fix it with an elastic band (provides an airtight cover), or clamp the front flexible hydraulic hose. Clean the area around the hydraulic hose to caliper union, and then slacken the union of the hose half turn being ready for spillage of fluid. Remove the brake pads, unscrew the caliper from the hydraulic hose, immediately wipe up any spilled brake fluid, and plug or cap the open unions. If desired, remove the caliper bracket by undoing the two bolts that hold it in position on the steering knuckle: Note that new bolts will be required for refitting. With the brake caliper removed, clean it on the outside with methylated spirit and a soft brush, remove the brake caliper bleed screw and empty any hydraulic fluid remaining in the caliper. Take out the piston dust boot and draw the piston from the caliper bore by applying a low air pressure if needed. Hook out the piston seal from the bore with a hard instrument and withdraw the two-guide pin rubber bushes. Clean piston and caliper bore with lint free rag and clean brake fluid or methylated spirit and polish out the slight imperfections with steel wool, but if pitting, scoring or wear ridges are evident, the caliper must be renewed. Rubber components are renewed as a matter of course and the fluid inlet and the bleed screw hole are blown through with compressed air. Lubricate the new piston seal with clean brake fluid and apply it into the groove in the bore using only fingers. Fit a new dust boot to the piston making sure it is well seated and lubricate both the piston and bore with clean brake fluid. Offer the piston and dust boot to the caliper, securing the dust boot with the groove in the caliper and then pushing the piston through the dust boot into the caliper bore. Fit the new guide pin rubber bushes and refit the caliper bleed screw. If it needs to be removed, reinstall the caliper bracket with new bolts that are tightened to the specified torque. Refit the brake pads, screwing the caliper on the flexible hose before mounting it in the caliper bracket. Tighten the flexible hose union, making sure that the hose is not kinked, and remove any clamps or polythene, then bleed the hydraulic system. Apply footbrake two or three times to seat the pads, fit the roadwheel again, lower the car and tighten the wheel bolts in diagonal order at the specified amount of torque.
