To remove the power steering pump, start by firmly applying the handbrake, jacking up the front of the car, and supporting it on axle stands. Next, take out the retaining screws and fasteners to remove the undershield beneath the engine/transmission, followed by the auxiliary drivebelt. Use brake hose clamps to clamp both the supply and return hoses near the power steering fluid reservoir to minimize fluid loss. Clean the area around the power steering pump fluid pipe unions. For engines excluding GDI, loosen the retaining clip and disconnect the fluid supply hose from the pump, unscrew the union nut and retaining clip bolt, and disconnect the outlet pipe while being prepared for fluid spillage; plug the hose/pipe ends and pump unions to prevent fluid loss and dirt entry, discarding the outlet pipe sealing ring for later replacement. Then, through the cut-outs in the pump pulley, loosen and remove the bolts securing the front mounting bracket to the pump, unscrew the bolts securing the mounting bracket to the cylinder block, and remove the bracket. Undo the bolts securing the pump to the rear bracket and maneuver the pump out of position. For GDI engines, unbolt the steering fluid reservoir and set it aside, unbolt the fluid outlet pipe clamps from the car body, disconnect the wiring plug from the pressure switch at the front of the pump, and release the wiring from the retaining clips. Release or cut off the clip securing the low-pressure hose to the top of the pump and remove the hose. Unscrew the fluid outlet pipe union bolt, recover the washer and O-ring, and remove the pipe from the pump while being prepared for fluid loss; plug the pump openings and pipe ends to prevent further fluid loss and dirt entry. Finally, loosen and remove the three pump mounting bolts to take the steering pump from the engine mounting bracket. If the power steering pump is faulty, it must be replaced as it is a sealed unit and cannot be overhauled. For refitting, reverse the removal process, ensuring to fit new O-ring seals and washers where necessary, clean all union fittings, securely reconnect all hoses (using new pipe clips if needed), tighten the pump mounting bolts, refit the auxiliary drivebelt and tension it, and securely hold the undershield with all its retaining screws and fasteners. Upon completion, bleed the hydraulic system.
