Volvo S40 Power Steering Pump

Volvo S40 Power Steering Pump gives the vehicle the hydraulic thrust that allows one to control the small sedan with the tip of the fingertips. The Power Steering Pump is attached to the engine, is rotated by a serpentine belt, and converts crankshaft energy into pressured fluid, which is then transferred through a high pressure hose to the control valve within the rack and pinion and causes a piston to move the steering linkage each time the wheel turns. With the wheel kept straight, the car is kept straight by equal pressure on both sides of the piston; when the wheel is turned, the torsion bar slightly twists and diverts the flow to one side, redirecting the push to where it is required. The much relied on fully hydraulic belt driven Volvo pump, with a simple flow circuit, has been abandoned in favour of an electronically modulated Power Steering Pump that monitors speed and steering angle sensors to refine the output, providing ample assistance in the car park but less support at highway speed to improve road feel. Depending on the version, the reservoir can either be mounted on top of the pump or off road on the fender, both supplying fluid back to the pump through a low pressure return line. The typical danger signals include whining due to low fluid, squealing due to a loose belt, leaks at the hose connectors, and heavy low speed steering, which are indicators of a faulty Volvo unit; observing the amount of fluid and belt tension keeps the legendary Volvo S40 steering confidence intact.

Volvo S40 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the Power Steering Pump on the right-hand side headlight assembly on Volvo S40?
    A:
To remove the right hand side headlight, first remove the front bumper and then right hand wheel arch liner. Use a syringe to suck all of the fluid out of the pump reservoir that you can. Next, undo pressure pipe union lock bracket bolt a few turns and remove the pressure pipe union lock bracket. Disconnect the wiring plugs from the EPS module and release the clip to disconnect the fluid return pipe from the reservoir and then undo the union to disconnect the pressure pipe. Be sure to plug or seal the openings to prevent contamination and be ready for spillage of fluid. After that, undo the three bolts to remove the assembly. Note that individual parts for the EPS/pump are not available, only in case of faultiness exchange of units is available from Volvo. For refitting, reverse the process used to remove the unit, using a new O. Ring on the pressure pipe union, and tightening the mounting bolts to the prescribed torque. If a new EPS is to be installed, appropriate software is available for download from Volvo, so talk to a local dealer or specialist. Finally, add or top up fluid reservoir and bleed system.
