Volvo V50 Power Steering Pump

The Volvo V50 Power Steering Pump is the hydraulic heart of the system, and it multiplies the effort of the driver so that as one moves in a parking lot, the wheel turns effortlessly but still responds naturally when moving on the open road. The pump is attached to the engine and is rotated by a serpentine belt, transferring the crankshaft power into pressurized fluid, which is delivered by a hose into a control valve within the rack-and-pinion gear, forcing a piston to push the steering linkage in the desired direction. Fluid is then directed back via a low pressure line to be recirculated. The previous Volvo models in the same compact series were based on this purely hydraulic design, either with an on-pump or a remote reservoir, but later Volvo models implemented an electronically controlled version of the same pump, with inputs of speed and steering angle to vary the flow for light assistance in tight turns and hard feedback at highway speeds. Irrespective of style, the Power Steering Pump should not have any leaks and should be sufficiently tensioned in place, or the driver can hear a squeal, whine, or experience heavy steering. The indicators would include low fluid, belt noises, or higher turning effort, which are indicators of loss of pressure, and a quick gauge check against factory specifications would determine whether the Power Steering Pump can still handle the requirements. Since the small V50 has the same technology as other Volvo passenger cars, it means that the parts will match, and the performance will be similar along the line, giving the owner reliable, confidence-building steering action.

Volvo V50 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the Power Steering Pump on the right-hand side headlight assembly on Volvo V50?
    A:
To remove the right hand side headlight, first remove the front bumper and then right hand wheel arch liner. Use a syringe to suck all of the fluid out of the pump reservoir that you can. Next, undo pressure pipe union lock bracket bolt a few turns and remove the pressure pipe union lock bracket. Disconnect the wiring plugs from the EPS module and release the clip to disconnect the fluid return pipe from the reservoir and then undo the union to disconnect the pressure pipe. Be sure to plug or seal the openings to prevent contamination and be ready for spillage of fluid. After that, undo the three bolts to remove the assembly. Note that individual parts for the EPS/pump are not available, only in case of faultiness exchange of units is available from Volvo. For refitting, reverse the process used to remove the unit, using a new O. Ring on the pressure pipe union, and tightening the mounting bolts to the prescribed torque. If a new EPS is to be installed, appropriate software is available for download from Volvo, so talk to a local dealer or specialist. Finally, add or top up fluid reservoir and bleed system.
