Volvo V50 Steering Column Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the steering column on Volvo V50?
    A:
To take out the steering column, first disconnect the battery negative lead. Extend the steering column as far as it goes and remove the Steering Wheel. Next, undo the fasteners and remove the lower facia panel from the side of the driver. Remove the knee bolster and air duct from underneath the steering column by undoing four screws. Then, undo the three Torx screws of the lower shroud, separate the upper and lower shroud to remove the retaining pegs and remove the lower shroud while pushing the upper shroud upward out of the way. If necessary, unclip the gaiter between the upper shroud and the facia. The wiper/washer switch and turn indicator switch are held in place by two screws each, undo these screws and pull the switches down to the sides. Next, undo two screws, undo the clip and pull the contact reel/steering wheel module backwards, breaking the wiring plugs as the assembly is pulled back. Remove any remaining wiring plugs and release clips that hold the wiring harness to the column's guide on the underside of the column. Carefully pull the steering column lower gaiter from place, releasing the clips, then undo the lower pinch-bolt of the steering column, pulling the joint upwards from the pinion, but ensuring that the steering column adjustment lever is also released. Discard the pinch-bolt, and fit a new one. Undo the four retaining bolts and maneuver the column from the vehicle discarding the bolts and preparing to fit the new bolts. If required, drill out the security screws, press in the retaining pin and remove the steering lock from the column, keeping in mind that no further dismantling of the assembly is recommended. For refitting, reverse the removal process and make sure to lubricate the universal joint splines with grease before engaging the steering obstruction as you place the shortest new column retaining bolts nearest to the bulkhead and use a new universal joint pinch-bolt and, if refitting the steering lock, tighten the new security screws until their heads snap off.
