Volvo V70 Power Steering Pump

The Volvo V70 Power Steering Pump reduces the effort of steering by changing engine torque into hydraulic pressure that helps the driver turn the wheel. The pump, which is mounted on the engine and rotates on a V-belt or serpentine belt by the crankshaft, draws fluid from the attached or remote reservoir, pressurizes it, and directs the flow through a high-pressure hose to the steering gear control valve, which diverts the flow to one side of a piston in the rack or steering box. At the center of the wheel, the pressure is evenly distributed on either side of the piston; thus, the car travels in a straight line; however, as soon as the wheel turns, the valve skews toward one side, and the additional force rotates the wheels with minimum effort. Prior V70 versions employed a constant-flow hydraulic system, and in these Volvo systems assist remained elevated at all speeds and at one point felt extremely light on highways. Subsequent Volvo models retained the same fundamental pumping components but included an electronic flow-control valve that uses signals of speed and steering angle and reduces output when easy parking tasks are attempted and when at cruise speed more firm road feel is wanted. It is this development that enabled Volvo to strike a balance between comfort and feedback. Common symptoms of a worn-out Power Steering Pump are whining sounds, fluid leakage, squealing belts, and increased steering effort when making low-speed turns, and pressure checks that do not meet factory standards establish whether the Power Steering Pump has to be replaced.

Volvo V70 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Power Steering Pump auxiliary drivebelt on Volvo V70?
    A:
To remove the auxiliary drivebelt, you first need to improve access to it by removing the cold air inlet duct from the ECU box if it is fitted, and releasing the fluid supply hose from the clip on the pump pulley. To minimize the fluid loss, clamp the fluid supply hose near the pump and then loosen the pressure pipe union lock bracket bolt a few turns and take off the lock bracket. Place absorbent rags underneath the pump, unscrew the pressure pipe union and recover the O-ring. Carefully disconnect the fluid supply hose from the pipe stub on the pump without using excessive force so as not to damage it. Access the pulley and undo the three mounting bolts from the pump and for diesel models to remove the bracket from the back of the pump. If contamination of power steering fluid is suspected, the car should be raised and supported at the front so that the wheels are just off the ground, and then a suitable container should be placed beneath the car to catch the fluid from the hoses while the steering is turned from lock to lock. If a new pump is being fitted, transfer the pulley and reservoir should be done by a dealer or qualified repairer because of the special tools required. For refitting, follow the reverse order of removal while using a new O-ring on the pressure pipe union, tightening the mounting bolts to the specified torque, refitting the auxiliary drivebelt, ensuring pressure pipe union locking bracket fits around the hexagon section of the union and refilling or topping up the fluid reservoir while bleeding the system.
