In order to remove the front wheel, it is necessary to firstly loosen the appropriate bolts, then chock the rear wheels, jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands before removing the roadwheel. Next counterhold the tie rod and slacken the tie rod end locknut by half a turn to act as a guide for refitting. Unscrew the tie rod end balljoint nut and separate balljoint from steering arm using proprietary balljoint separator, remove the balljoint nut and disengage the balljoint from the steering arm while holding the tie rod end balljoint with a second spanner. Unscrew the tie rod end from the tie rod, counting the number of turns on the tie rod for later use to reset the tracking. For refitting, screw the tie rod end on the tie rod with as many turns as noted when it was removed, snap the balljoint in the steering arm, place a new nut, and tighten it to the torque. Counterhold the tie rod and tighten the locknut, refit the front wheel, lower the car and tighten wheel bolts in a diagonal sequence to specified torque. Finally, have the toe in of the front wheel checked and adjusted by a Volvo dealer or suitably-equipped repairer.
