Volvo V40 Power Steering Pump

The Volvo V40 Power Steering Pump allows the driver to effortlessly steer the small hatch since engine power is converted into hydraulic power, which helps to steer the steering rack. Early Volvo V40 vehicles use a belt-driven hydraulic Power Steering Pump which pulls fluid through a reservoir, forcing it through a high-pressure hose to a control valve in the rack, and then returning it through a low-pressure line, providing quick assist at parking speeds without breaking its direct mechanical connection in the event of pressure loss. The pump snout can bear its own reservoir or have a reservoir attached to it, and it spins off the crankshaft by way of a V-belt or serpentine belt, allowing a loose belt to squeal briefly and temporarily rob it of assistance. Subsequent Volvo models embrace a more electronically modulated pump, which is still hydraulic in principle but is controlled by the output of speed and steering angle sensors that adjust flow to add boost around town and reduce it at highway speeds in favor of a more pleasing road feel. In case the Power Steering Pump is leaking or whining, bad seals, low fluid levels, or a slipping belt are all likely suspects, and heavy steering normally indicates low internal pressure that can be verified by a gauge test. In the case of a Volvo owner, careful inspection of the hoses, belt tension, and fluid level makes the difference between the quick and painless turning experience that every reliable hatchback is supposed to provide.

Volvo V40 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace a power steering pump on Volvo V40?
    A:
To remove the power steering pump, start by firmly applying the handbrake, jacking up the front of the car, and supporting it on axle stands. Next, take out the retaining screws and fasteners to remove the undershield beneath the engine/transmission, followed by the auxiliary drivebelt. Use brake hose clamps to clamp both the supply and return hoses near the power steering fluid reservoir to minimize fluid loss. Clean the area around the power steering pump fluid pipe unions. For engines excluding GDI, loosen the retaining clip and disconnect the fluid supply hose from the pump, unscrew the union nut and retaining clip bolt, and disconnect the outlet pipe while being prepared for fluid spillage; plug the hose/pipe ends and pump unions to prevent fluid loss and dirt entry, discarding the outlet pipe sealing ring for later replacement. Then, through the cut-outs in the pump pulley, loosen and remove the bolts securing the front mounting bracket to the pump, unscrew the bolts securing the mounting bracket to the cylinder block, and remove the bracket. Undo the bolts securing the pump to the rear bracket and maneuver the pump out of position. For GDI engines, unbolt the steering fluid reservoir and set it aside, unbolt the fluid outlet pipe clamps from the car body, disconnect the wiring plug from the pressure switch at the front of the pump, and release the wiring from the retaining clips. Release or cut off the clip securing the low-pressure hose to the top of the pump and remove the hose. Unscrew the fluid outlet pipe union bolt, recover the washer and O-ring, and remove the pipe from the pump while being prepared for fluid loss; plug the pump openings and pipe ends to prevent further fluid loss and dirt entry. Finally, loosen and remove the three pump mounting bolts to take the steering pump from the engine mounting bracket. If the power steering pump is faulty, it must be replaced as it is a sealed unit and cannot be overhauled. For refitting, reverse the removal process, ensuring to fit new O-ring seals and washers where necessary, clean all union fittings, securely reconnect all hoses (using new pipe clips if needed), tighten the pump mounting bolts, refit the auxiliary drivebelt and tension it, and securely hold the undershield with all its retaining screws and fasteners. Upon completion, bleed the hydraulic system.
