Volvo S70 Power Steering Pump

The Volvo S70 Power Steering Pump allows the driver to rotate the wheel with the least amount of muscular force by transmitting engine power into high-pressure fluid, which is applied to press a piston within the steering rack, creating instant hydraulic assistance. The crankshaft-to-pump drive is belt-driven. Fluid contained in either an on-pump or remote reservoir is pumped via a high-pressure hose to a control valve, which then directs the pressure to the required side of the cylinder, with a low-pressure line returning the fluid to the next cycle. During the Volvo S70 run, two layouts of the pumps were utilized, both of which were hydraulic, though one utilized the reservoir cast onto the housing and the other utilized a separate plastic tank attached via hose; the only difference chiefly concerns under-hood space and the maintenance schedule. The basic principle of all types of reservoirs is that every pump uses the same fundamental mechanism, which is a belt-driven rotor and vanes that develop the required assist pressure, as such, the Power Steering Pump remains the heart of the system. This car was also equipped in some of its later Volvo models with speed-sensitive flow control to ensure a light feel at high speed, and some middle-cycle models of this car followed the concept, providing a speed sensor and small electric valve in the pump to adjust output in order to make parking easy and maintain high-speed feedback. Common signs of trouble are whining, leaking around the seals or hoses, or stiff steering at lower speeds, which all indicate that the Power Steering Pump has to be inspected or replaced to offer a Volvo driver predictable, smooth steering once more.

Volvo S70 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Power Steering Pump and related components on Volvo S70?
    A:
To remove the auxiliary drivebelt, drain approximately three litres of coolant from the radiator, and disconnect the radiator top hose from the thermostat housing. For improved access, remove the cold air inlet duct from the ECU box, disconnecting the ECU box air inlet duct and the fluid supply hose from the clip on the engine oil dipstick tube or above the pump pulley. For models with a remote-mounted reservoir, lift the reservoir out of its mounting and clamp the fluid hose to reduce fluid loss, then slacken the fluid pressure pipe union nut one quarter of a turn and undo the four mounting bolts at the rear of the pump. For models with a pump-mounted reservoir, undo the upper mounting bolt of the reservoir guard plate, remove the spacer sleeve, and slacken the lower mounting nut, then slacken the fluid pressure pipe union nut one quarter of a turn and undo the five pump mounting bolts, carefully lifting the pump out of its location. For all models, place absorbent rags below the pump, unscrew the pressure pipe union, and recover the O-ring. Separate the fluid supply hose from the pipe stub on the pump without using excessive force, and if necessary, make a small cut lengthways in the hose to facilitate removal, ensuring the hose is not shortened beyond the marking stripe. Raise and support the front of the car so the wheels are just clear of the ground, position a suitable container beneath the front of the car, and collect fluid from the hoses as the steering is turned from lock to lock. If a new pump is to be fitted, have the pulley and reservoir transferred by a dealer, as special tools are required. For refitting, follow the reverse order of removal, using a new O-ring on the pressure pipe union, trimming the return hose if it was cut, tightening the mounting and guard plate bolts to the specified torque, refitting the auxiliary drivebelt, topping up the cooling system, removing the hose clamp, refitting the reservoir into its mounting, and refilling the fluid reservoir while bleeding the system.
