Volvo S70 Steering Wheel

The Volvo S70 Steering Wheel provides the driver with direct control of the direction of the car, as the movement of the hand is converted into the synchronized movement of the front wheels. This Steering Wheel, which, in all Volvo cabs, is the connection to the road, has inside the assembly a hardy hub and spokes that transfer rotary movement via a simple mechanical connection, a hydraulic power assist loop, or more recently electric boost motors, so that even a small twist can align both road wheels with minimum effort. Normal factory production rims have a robust construction that is meant to withstand the vibrations and wear that occur in normal usage, but under heavy work, the rigidity can deteriorate or weird sounds may ensue, which are indicators of control accuracy fading. During the existence of the model there have been two general styles, the old fashioned wheel with the hydraulic rack and pinion gear and the newer model intended to interface with computer controlled electric assistance, the only difference being who provides the additional force in turning, whether the hydraulic fluid or a small motor. All Volvo S70 models have the same grip, and subsequent Volvo models maintained the rim feel and ergonomics and placed airbags without compromising the core feel. Whichever assist type is present, the Steering Wheel is the only input point, and it is very important that the surface and the hub do not have any play, as this will ensure safety in maneuvering.

Volvo S70 Steering Wheel Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit a steering wheel on Volvo S70?
    A:
To take the steering wheel off, you have to drive your car forwards and park it with the front wheels facing directly forwards. Disconnect the battery negative lead and wait for 10 minutes. Place masking tape over the top of the steering wheel hub and steering column upper shroud, draw a pencil line across the hub and the column shroud for alignment. Turn the ignition key to position I to release the steering lock, and remove the airbag unit from the steering wheel and undo the steering wheel center retaining bolt. Make sure that the front wheels are straight again by aligning the marks on the masking tape and then lift the steering wheel off the column shaft by passing the wiring and plastic strip through the hole in the wheel. For refitting, make sure the front wheels are still straight ahead, feed the wiring through the hole in the steering wheel, and engage the wheel with the steering column shaft, making sure the alignment marks match and the contact reel pegs are engaged properly. Refit the steering wheel retaining bolt and make it finger tight. Remove the airbag contact reel locking screw, refit the screw and plastic strip to the designated place in the steering wheel. Finally, tighten the steering wheel retaining bolt to specified torque and reattach the airbag unit to the steering wheel.
