Volvo S70 Rack and Pinion Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the Rack and Pinion Boot and Steering Shaft on Volvo S70?
    A:
To remove the Steering Column and the column intermediate shaft, first fold up the top portion of the rubber boot at the base of the steering shaft. Next, prize out the locking ring from the lower part of the rubber boot, then remove the rubber boot and bearing assembly. Remove the locking spring clip, undo the nut and remove the clamp bolt from the steering shaft universal joint. Pull the universal joint upwards off the steering gear pinion shaft and pull the steering shaft out of the car. For refitting, engage the universal joint with the steering gear pinion shaft, making sure that it is fully seated and aligned with the groove below the pinion shaft splines. Refit the clamp bolt and nut and tighten the nut to the recommended torque and fit the locking spring clip. Lubricate the needle bearing in the rubber boot with grease and soapy water on the lower portion of the boot. With the top portion of the boot folded up, take the lower portion and fit it down to the collar on the bulkhead so as to provide a good seal. Lubricate the locking ring with soapy water and force it into place around the lower part of the boot and the bulkhead. Finally, fold down the top portion of the boot to lock around the locking ring flange and refit the intermediate shaft and the steering column.
  • Q: How to count and record the number of exposed threads on the track rod and replace the track rod end with a Rack and Pinion Boot on Volvo S70?
    A:
Count and record the number of exposed threads on the track rod, from the end of the rod to the track rod end locknut. Remove the track rod end on the side concerned by unscrewing the locknut from the track rod. Release the two clips and peel off the gaiter. Clean out any dirt and grit from the inner end of the track rod and, when accessible, the rack. Pack the new gaiter with 20 grams of steering gear grease obtainable from Volvo dealers, then fit and secure the new gaiter. Refit the track rod end locknut, positioning it so that the same number of threads counted on removal are visible, and then refit the track rod end.
