To remove the steering column, first disconnect the battery negative lead. Next, remove the
Steering Wheel. Undo the three screws from under the steering column lower shroud, then prise the upper and lower shrouds apart to release the retaining pegs, allowing you to remove the lower shroud and lift the upper shroud out of the way. Remove the trim panel under the facia on the driver's side, which is secured by a single screw, and pull it out of its locating slots at the top, disconnecting the wiring plug from the footwell light. Release the cable clip and disconnect the airbag wiring from the contact reel at the top of the steering column, then undo the three screws to remove the contact reel and its wiring connector. Next, undo the two screws on each side to remove both steering column multi-function switches and disconnect their wiring connectors. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring connector from the side of the switch and the wiring from the anti-theft immobilizer reader coil. Insert the ignition key into the switch and turn it to position I. Using a 2.0 mm diameter pin punch or similar item, depress the ignition switch locking tab through the hole in the housing above the switch and withdraw the switch. Remove the connector bracket from the top of the steering column, pull down the steering column wiring harness at its mid-point, and undo the column upper mounting nuts, removing the washers. Finally, withdraw the steering column from the lower mounting and intermediate shaft, and remove it from the car. For refitting, reverse the removal steps while ensuring to lubricate the intermediate shaft splines with grease before engaging the steering column, centralize the column in the facia aperture before tightening the upper mounting nuts to the specified torque, and when refitting the ignition switch, turn the key to position I, depress the locking tab, and push the switch into the barrel until the tab locates in its recess. Ensure that the rubber boots over the column multi-function switch stalks locate correctly in the column upper and lower shrouds, and that the shrouds clip together properly before refitting the steering wheel.
