If a new rack bushing is being fitted, position it so that the locks on the bush align with the slots in the housing and drive it in with a drift. Fit the pinion with the upper bearing in the housing (no shims) and fit the spacer sleeve, then attach the pinion cover with a gasket but without the seal. Using a dial gauge, check the end play of the pinion, remove the pinion cover, and determine a shim thickness equal to the measured endplay plus 0.0039 in (0.1 mm) for pre-loading, with shims available in thicknesses of 0.005-0.0075-0.01 in (0.127-0.191-0.254 mm). Fit a new seal on the pinion cover, applying a non-hardening gasket compound on the seal and using a suitably sized tube to drive it on. Fit the rack from the pinion side, taking care not to damage the bushing, then fit the pinion with the upper bearing, shims, and spacer sleeve, followed by the pinion cover gasket and the cover. Fit the pre-loading piston in the housing without the 'O' ring and spring, using a steel ruler and feeler gauge to measure the end clearance and determine the thickness of shims required, ensuring that shims and gasket together equal the measured end clearance plus 0.0008-0.0059 in (0.02-0.15 mm) for the piston endplay, with shims available in thicknesses of 0.005-0.01-0.015-0.02 in (0.127-0.254-0.381-0.508 mm). Place the spring and 'O' ring in the piston and fit the gasket and cover. Connect a torque gauge to the pinion shaft and crank the rack back and forward to each end of its travel, ensuring the torque is 5.15 lb f in (0.06-0.17 kg f m) if the pre-loading is correct. Fit the left side trackrod, placing a thin shim between the ball joint and rack shoulder if using the same rod, allowing an unused part of the ball joint to be locked by peening the edge into the rack groove, then fit the bellows and tighten the inner clamp. Fit the right side rod in the same way, ensuring both rods are the same length within 0.06 in (1.6 mm). Fill the rack and pinions with specified oil by inserting an oil gun under the lip of the bellows.

On vehicles that have air bags, make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead with the steering wheel locked so there is no possibility that the air bags will deploy. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and disarming the air bag system, if applicable. Safely raise and support the vehicle on jackstands and remove the front wheels and the splashguard from underneath. With the wheels pointed straight you measure the length from one tie rod end to the steering rack housing. Remove the steering column U-joint by making a mark on the shaft for alignment then removing the cotter pin and loosening the nut and bolt that holds the joint in place on the column shaft before separating the joint and steering shaft. Remove the tie rod ends, fit a drip pan underneath the hoses to the steering rack and tag off the hoses and discard the copper sealing washers. If equipped, remove the sway bar, then remove the two bolts and nuts on the fixation of the steering rack, and bring down the steering rack from the vehicle frame. For installation, place the steering rack and fix it with the fixing nuts and bolts (tighten it to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)). Reinstall the sway bar if removed, connect the hoses to the rack with new sealing washers and bolt the hose tight with 30 ft. lbs. (42 Nm). Install the tie rod ends, join the steering shaft and U-joint by aligning the scribe mark and tighten the retainer nut and bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and install a new cotter pin. Reconnect the splashguard, fill the steering reservoir and bleed the system before lowering the vehicle. For the 700 Series, 900 Series and S90/V90, disconnect the negative battery cable, lift and props the vehicle, remove the splash guard and small jacking panel, unbolt the lower steering shaft from the steering gear and unbolt and unbolt the snaprings and bolts on the lower universal joint. Disconnect the tie rods, fluid lines and sway bar mounting brackets and lower the steering gear. When reinstalling, set the rack in place, and install the retaining bolts, tightening them to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm), and reconnect the fluid lines with new copper washers, tighten the tie rod nuts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm), and lock the universal joint in place. Disconnect the power steering fluid lines, remove the nuts that secure the steering rack to the subframe, bring down the subframe, remove the power steering lines from the steering rack, and remove the steering column joint bolt. Install new steering rack, connect fluid lines, align and tighten steering rack mount bolts and tighten subframe bolts. Finally, install the front and rear steering fluid line brackets, engine splashguard, wheels, fill the power steering fluid reservoir, reconnect the negative battery cable, start the vehicle, bleed the steering system, check the fluid level and check the toe-in.
