This procedure applies only to 240 series vehicles with manual rack and pinion assembly; all other models of the 240 series and other vehicles have a power rack and pinion. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable, then remove the lockbolt and nut from the column flange by bending the flange slightly with a screwdriver. Safely raise and support the vehicle, take the front wheels off and remove the tie rod ends with a ball joint puller. Next, remove the splash guard, the steering gear from the front axle member and at the steering shaft flange, and remove the steering gear and save the dowel pins. For installation, first lay rubber spacers and plates used to attach the steering gears, install the steering gear, and guide the pinion shaft into the steering shaft, making sure the recess on the pinion shaft faces the lockbolt opening. Attach the steering gear to the front axle member, check the U-bolts are lined in the plate slots when installing them flat washers and nuts and tighten them to 10-18 ft. lbs. Install splash guard, connect steering rods to steering arms and tighten the nuts to 44 ft. lbs. Install the front wheels, lower vehicle and install lockbolt for steering shaft flange and tighten it to 18 ft. lbs. The last thing to do is have the alignment checked and reset if necessary, then reconnect the negative battery cable.
