To take off the steering rack, first you drive the car forward and park it with the steering wheels straight and remove the ignition key. For diesel models, pull the plastic cover over the engine straight up. Loosen the bolts on the front wheel, chock the rear wheels, jack up the front, and support it on axle stands before removing both front roadwheels. Unscrew the left-hand track rod end balljoint nut, separate the balljoint from the steering arm with a balljoint separator and repeat for the right-hand side. Measure the length of the track rod on one side against the steering rack housing Remove the engine undershield and release the screws holding the engine undershield and the bolts holding the exhaust pipe front crossmember, release the brake pipes and remove the crossmember. From underneath the car, remove the steering rack fluid pipe retaining clip bolts at the front and the back of the subframe. For right-hand-drive models undo the two steering rack crash guard bolts and remove the crash guard. On models with speed sensitive power steering, trace and disconnect the wiring from the rack. Clean the area of the fluid pipe unions around the steering rack pinion housing and place a container under the housing, unscrew the union nuts, and carefully pull the pipes clear. Undo the nuts and screws that fix the steering rack to the subframe and place a sturdy trolley jack under the rear end of the subframe, being sure to support it well. Undo the bolts that hold the subframe rear mounting brackets to the body and the single bolts that hold the rear mounting brackets to the subframe, recovering washers. Slacken the two subframe front mounting bolts off slightly and lower the jack until the subframe drops about 90mm so that the steering rack mounting bolts are clear. Extract the locking clip, undo the nut and remove the clamp bolt from the steering shaft universal joint and push the universal joint upwards off the steering rack pinion shaft. Undo the bolt that holds the steering rack to the back engine mounting and manipulate the steering rack out the right hand side of the car. If installing a new steering rack assembly, transfer the heat shield from the old rack. For refitting: set the length of the track rod to the previous recorded dimension, manipulate the steering rack into position on the subframe, and bear on the rear engine mounting, set the engine mounting bolt to the set torque. Timing: Engage the steering shaft universal joint and the pinion shaft, ensuring the alignment is good, and fit the new universal joint pinch-bolt, tightening it to the specified torque. Raise the subframe at the back and loosen the bolts on the steering rack and refit the rear mounting brackets to the body, doing up the bolts hand tight. Tighten the rear mounting brackets to the subframe with washers and new bolts, also hand tight. Move the Jack to the front of the subframe, raise the jack to just take the weight of the subframe, unscrew the bolts on the front of the subframe, insert new bolts and tighten the bolts hand tight. Tighten the two subframe mounting bolts on the left-hand side to the specified torque then the same for the right-hand side, then the four mounting bracket-to-body bolts. Secure the steering rack with new nuts/bolts to the specific torque, reconnect the oil pipes to the steering rack with new O-ring seals and tighten the unions. On right-hand drive vehicles, refit the steering rack guard and then refit the exhaust pipe front crossmember, clip the brake pipes in place, and tighten the retaining bolts securely. Refit track rod ends to hub carriers with new nuts tightened to specified torque, and reconnect wiring plugs on models with speed sensitive power steering. For diesel models, re-attach the plastic cover over the engine, then the engine undershield. Refit the roadwheels and bleed the steering rack and lowering the car, tighten the bolts on the wheels in a diagonal pattern to the specification torque. Finally, have the front wheel toe-in checked and adjusted by a qualified dealer/repairer.
