Volvo 245 Rack and Pinions Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What operations should be carried out on Rack And Pinions when removing the oil pipes and pre-loading device components on Volvo 245?
    A:
Carry out the operations by removing the oil pipes and the pre-loading device cover, piston, 'O' ring, and sleeve, taking care not to turn the rack and pinions shaft to avoid an oil spray. Next, remove the lower cover and spacer sleeve for the rack and pinions, releasing the locking tab and removing the nut, then unscrew the inner bearing race with ball retainer and outer race. Proceed to remove the valve housing cover and spring, lifting off the valve housing carefully to avoid damage, and lift out the rack and pinions. Remove the lock bolt for the right side housing, pull off the housing and connecting tube, then pull out the rack and bearing sleeve, detaching the sleeve from the rack. Remove the bolt for the left side housing, extracting the outer tube from the housing and then the inner tube. For the upper bushing, a puller will be needed, using the tool in the middle of the sleeve. Lever out the upper outer race of the rack and pinions lower bearing using two thin screwdrivers. Remove both 'O' rings and spacer from the right side housing, as well as the bearing, 'O' ring, and seal from the valve housing cover. Additionally, remove the seal, 'O' ring, and plastic rings from the rack and bearing sleeve, followed by the plastic ring and 'O' ring beneath it from the rack. Finally, take out the oil seal, washer, and circlip from the inner tube, clean all parts with white spirit, and examine them for wear or damage. If any components such as the rack and pinions, control valve, or valve housing are faulty, all assembly parts should be renewed, and if the bearing is replaced, the bearing sleeve for the rack should also be renewed along with all seals and 'O' rings.
  • Q: What special tools are required to carry out the necessary checks and adjustments on Rack And Pinions on Volvo 245?
    A:
To make the necessary checks and adjustments, special instruments are used, and the illustrations provide a detail of the Volvo tools, but there are suitable equivalents, such as to make tool 5054, cutting the centre out of a pinion cover. Connect the test gauge in front of the windscreen so that it can be seen from the driver's seat. Fill up the oil reservoir near to the top, start the engine and burn the engine until the level is stable then top up with ATF type A, For G (Duckhams 0-Matic) until the level stabilizes. Slowly turn the steering wheel from side to side, topped up with oil as required, until the reservoir is almost free of air bubbles, then fit the reservoir cap. Remove the steering wheel impact pad and turn the steering wheel almost to the right limit position, and triple the torque gauge to the steering wheel center nut using a socket and extension with 27mm. Use the torque gauge to slowly turn to the right, reading the torque when the pressure gauge is close to 170 psi (12 kg/sq cm) to ensure that the torque is read exactly at the moment of the pressure. Check the balance when turning the steering wheel to the left, torque should be between 2.5-3.3 lb f ft (0.35-0.45 kg f m), maximum different torque between sides difference 0.7 lb f ft (0.1 kg f m). Should the difference in torque be too great, shut off the engine, remove the lock nut and lock washer on the rack and pinions lower bearing and adjust the torque by straightening the lockwasher tab and turning the adjustment nut accordingly. To check the pump pressure at the left side end position, turn the steering wheel as far left as possible and read the gauge for a maximum of 10 seconds, expecting a pressure of 995 psi to 1,150 psi (70 kg/sq cm to 80 kg/sq cm) and repeat for the right side. If the pressure of the pump is incorrect, close the pressure gauge valve for the maximum of 10 seconds; if the pressure does not reach the specified figure, the pump has a defect. Re-check the balance when changing the steering to both sides, making sure the difference in torque is not out of limits. Switch off the engine, lock rack and pinions nut with lockwasher, remove adjusting flange with extreme care so as not to damage the gasket, and put on the pinion cover. Fill the rack and pinions with lubricating oil by inserting an oil gun under the lip of the bellows and compressing the bellows to allow the oil to flow. Disconnect the test gauge and connect the pressure hose to the rack and pinions, and fit the steering wheel impact pad. Start the engine, turn the steering wheel to full left and full right and check the oil level in the reservoir and top-up if necessary before you fit the roadwheels and lower the car.
