To remove the console from models up to May 2000, start by disconnecting the battery negative lead. Next, remove the ashtray from the rear of the console and lift out the drinks holder insert to access the retaining screws at the rear section of the console, which should then be removed from the car. Undo the retaining screws for the left and right-hand side panels, carefully unclip, and remove them from the front of the centre console. For manual transmission models, unclip the gearchange lever gaiter and fold it back, while for automatic models, carefully prise out the selector lever position indicator panel, freeing the bulbholders and removing the panel. Ease the window switch panel assembly out and disconnect its wiring connectors, then remove the audio unit. If necessary, unclip and remove the storage compartment from the centre of the facia, followed by the ashtray/cigarette lighter assembly, disconnecting the wiring as it becomes accessible. Remove the screws securing the rear of the centre console front section to the floor, fully apply the handbrake, and lift the rear of the console front section over the handbrake lever, disconnecting the switch wiring connectors as they become accessible. For models from May 2000 onwards, remove the rubber tray in front of the gear lever, unclip the gaiter from the gear lever trim panel, and release the lugs around the edges of the trim panel to disconnect the wiring plug. Inside the oddments tray at the rear of the console, prise up the screw cover and remove the two screws underneath, followed by the two console retaining screws behind the gear lever. To remove the console, fully apply the handbrake and move the gear or selector lever to neutral, ensuring the front seats are fully lowered and rearmost. Carefully prise out the pen holder panel from in front of the gear/selector lever using a flat-bladed plastic or wooden tool. Rotate the fastener anti-clockwise and slide the console side panel rearwards to remove it, repeating this on the other side. Pull the rubber mat from the storage compartment floor and remove the two retaining Torx screws, then undo the two Torx screws at the front of the console. For manual transmission models, release the two clips and lift the front edge of the gear lever surround trim, pulling the gaiter/trim up around the gear lever knob. For non-Geartronic automatic models, grasp the selector lever gaiter, turn it and the internal retaining clip, then pull the gaiter down, ensuring the clip returns to its original position. For Geartronic automatic models, detach the lock ring securing the gaiter to the selector lever knob with a small screwdriver. Pull the selector lever knob firmly upwards to remove it, then release the two clips at the front of the selector lever panel and pull it upwards over the lever. Carefully prise up the rear edge of the gear/selector lever panel. For manual transmission models, pull up the gaiter around the gear lever knob without needing to pull it over the knob, as the lever panel will fit through the aperture when the console is lifted away. For automatic transmission models, pull the panel upwards over the lever. Next, fully apply the handbrake and carefully prise free the trim panel below the handbrake lever, moving it upwards to disengage the main retaining clip, then work the gaiter over the lever and remove the trim panel. Lift the rear of the console and disconnect the wiring plug for the rear ashtray/accessory power socket. Maneuver the centre console over the handbrake and gearchange/selector levers, lifting the front edge first, and remove it from the vehicle, feeding the selector lever panel through the aperture on automatic models. The various sections of the console are held together by nuts and screws visible from beneath. Refitting is a reversal of the removal process.
