Volvo V50 Center Console

The Volvo V50 Center Console is a convenient organizer of the cockpit, which provides drivers and passengers with a personal territory of control and daily items. This Center Console fits between the seats and extends forward to the dash, with a storage box that has a lid, cupholders and button panels that allow cash, phones or climate switches to stay organized and easily accessible. The compartment of the Center Console is based on a simple hinge and latch system, which works well until repeated use of the joint tears the hinge or breaks the trim around it, which is a frequent cause of frustration during a commute into work. The production years continued to place the gear lever low in the tunnel, thus the console was a shallow tray, but the Volvo revamping of the V50 in later years moved the shifter to the upright stack, where the space could be applied to add deeper bins, additional power sockets and even mini chillers. Some models also included a rear auxiliary box that enabled back seat occupants to access heater vents or place small valuables away beyond the first row. Aesthetically, continual sun and wear may cause covers to fade or scuff doors, but changing such frivolous items in a few minutes restores the new cabin sensation typical of all Volvo's compact wagons. Altogether, the changing design of the Center Console reflects how Volvo manages to strike a balance between smart storage, clean design and everyday functionality.

Volvo V50 Center Console Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Center Console on Volvo V50?
    A:
To remove the console, first set the handbrake and push the gear lever into neutral, being careful to have the front seats completely down and the battery negative terminal disconnected. For early models, use a flat bladed tool to carefully lift the handbrake lever gaiter and then pull the panel in front of the centre console backwards to release clips. Depress the catch on the corners of the audio panel and pull it backwards, and then push the Infotainment Control Module from the console and disconnect the wiring plugs. Next, lift the cigarette lighter/power outlet panel and disconnect the wiring, undo the screws holding the centre panel and unclip the gaiter of the gear lever before removing the panel. Unclip the panel under the center armrest and undo the retaining screws and remove the screws at the front of the console. Lift the back of the console and unconnect the wiring for the back ashtray/power socket and then maneuver the centre console out of the car. For later models, start by removing the lower facia panel and unclip the handbrake lever gaiter, remove the audio panel by depressing the catch and pulling the panel forwards. To do this push the Infotainment Control Module backwards and disconnect the wiring, open up the centre armrest to reach and undo the screws. Remove the screws at the front of the console and around the audio module, and use a flat-bladed tool to lift the storage tray and cut panel around the handbrake lever. Lift the clip that is exposed by the storage tray removal and slide the lower console towards the back undoing the screws behind the gear lever. Disconnect the wiring plugs at the back of the climate control panel and between the air vent trunking, which allows the console to be withdrawn. Refitting is done by the reverse order.
