Volvo V50 Window Regulator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the window motor and window regulator for the front and rear door on Volvo V50?
    A:
To remove the front door window regulator, lower the front window by approximately 290mm, disconnect the battery negative lead, and slide the door window fully upwards, taping it in position. Remove the outer door handle, disconnect the door mirror wiring plug from the door cassette assembly, and take out the three bolts at the rear end of the door securing the lock mechanism along with the single screw at the base of the glass guide. Undo the Torx screw securing the outer handle frame to the door and the nine screws securing the door cassette assembly. Prise up the locking catch and disconnect the wiring plug from the door, then reach inside the door frame to slide up the plastic catch, squeeze the clips on the outside, and push the connector into the door. Manoeuvre the cassette assembly from the door, drill out the four rivets, and remove the window regulator. Refitting is the reverse of removal, and if a new regulator is fitted, the window position may need to be initialised using Volvo test equipment. For the rear door window regulator, lower the rear window by approximately 150mm, disconnect the battery negative lead, and slide the door window fully upwards, taping it in position. Remove the outer door handle, take out the three bolts at the rear end of the door securing the lock mechanism, and undo the eight screws securing the door cassette assembly. Peel back the rubber gaiter to detach the lock button, disconnect the door wiring plug from the pillar, and manoeuvre the cassette assembly from the door. Drill out the four rivets and remove the rear window regulator. Refitting follows the same procedure as removal, with the same initialisation requirement for a new regulator. For the front door window glass, lower the window by approximately 290mm, remove the door inner trim panel, prise open the plastic covers, and slacken the window clamp screws two turns. Pull the window upwards and manoeuvre it from the door, renewing the rear window clamp rubber if removed. For refitting, fit a new rubber into the rear window clamp, manoeuvre the glass into position, tighten the clamping screws securely, and refit the plastic covers. The rear door window glass removal involves lowering the window approximately 150mm, removing the door inner trim panel, prising out the inner and outer rubber strips, and carefully pulling the triangular trims from the rear corner of the window frame. Drill out the two rivets securing the rear window guide, slacken the window clamping screws three complete revolutions, release the inner rubber seal, and lift up the glass to remove it. Refitting is a reversal of removal, ensuring the window glass clamping screws are tightened securely and checking the window position before completely refitting the door trim panel. For the front window electric motor, remove the door inner trim panel, disconnect the three wiring plugs from the motor, and undo the three retaining bolts to pull the motor assembly from the regulator. Refitting is a reversal of removal, noting that if a new motor assembly is fitted, software must be downloaded to the control unit. For the rear window electric motor, remove the door inner trim panel, disconnect the wiring plug from the motor, and undo the three retaining bolts to pull the motor assembly from the regulator, with refitting being a reversal of removal and the same software requirement for a new motor assembly.
