The coolant temperature sensor, located in the
Thermostat housing, is used to provide an engine temperature source signal to the engine management system and to the temperature gauge located in the instrument panel. If there is a fault in the sensor or a loss of signal, from a lack of electrical connections, a fault code will be logged in the engine management system ECU which can be accessed through the diagnostic connector in the centre console with a suitable fault code reader. In the event of a logged fault code, it is important to carefully check the sensor wiring and wiring connector, further checks, in addition to testing with a new unit, should be carried out with Volvo test equipment and by a dealer. In order to remove the sensor, partially drain the cooling system to below the level of the sensor unit, loosen the clip, and disconnect the radiator top hose at the thermostat housing. Next, remove the two Trox bolts and remove the thermostat housing, disconnect the wiring at the adjacent connector and unscrew the sensor from its place in the thermostat housing. For refitting, install the new sensor unit with a blob of sensor sealant on the threads, reconnect the wiring connector, reattach the thermostat housing while tightening the screws firmly and reconnect the radiator hose before you top up the coolant level.
