Volvo S70 Distributor Cap

The Volvo S70 Distributor Cap keeps the five-cylinder engine on its toes by directing high-voltage current through the ignition coil to each spark plug one after another in the correct sequence. This Distributor Cap is made of hard plastic that prevents dirt, heat, and moisture from getting into the rotor and other sensitive ignition components, and its internal posts resemble miniature switchboards that pass the energy to the plug wires at the appropriate time. When this component is worn or broken, the sedan reminds its driver about it by shaking roughly during idle running, abruptly stopping, screaming during running or slow starts, and by indicating that no spark is reaching the cylinders at any time. Over the years Volvo has installed virtually the same general cap design, but employed different ignition systems in certain markets, using simple one-post-per-cylinder systems, and later designs may have additional terminals or different indexing tabs to prevent incorrect installation. Annual inspections keep your Volvo sound. And the fundamental job and replacement process are the same, in spite of those alterations. Cold weather is particularly dangerous as temperature changes may cause even the hard plastic housing to crack, so owners living in snowy areas need to check the part more frequently and make sure that the sealing O-ring is tight enough to prevent water, which would shorten the circuit. The cap is cheap, and thus many Volvo enthusiasts even remove it as a crude method of deterring theft when parking their second S70 for long intervals, when they know that the car cannot be started with a defective Distributor Cap attached.

Volvo S70 Distributor Cap Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How should Distributor Cap and Spark Plug Wire be inspected and maintained for proper engine operation on Volvo S70?
    A:
The spark plug (HT) leads should be one at a time to ensure that the firing order is not mixed up, otherwise there will be an improper operation of the engine. Gain access to the leads and disconnect them as required for the check and renewal of the spark plugs. Look inside the boot for corrosion, which may be visible as a white crusty powder, and clean this off as much as possible, if it is too much or it shows the metal connector is too corroded for further use, the lead must be renewed. Push the lead and boot back on the end of the spark plug and make sure it fits tightly, also if it doesn't fit snugly, use pliers to carefully crimp the metal connector inside the boot. Using a clean rag, wipe down the full length of the lead to remove accumulated dirt and grease, and then inspect the lead for burns, cracks and other damages, being careful not to bang sharp bends that may break the conductor. Inspect the other spark plug (HT) leads to be certain that each is securely fastened at the distributor cap and spark plug; if any signs of arcing, severe corrosion of connectors, burns, cracks, etc are notices, get new spark plug (HT) leads and renew them as a set. Remove the distributor cap and clean the inside and outside thoroughly with a dry lint-free rag. Take a look at the HT lead segments within the cap and if they seem to be badly burned or pitted, renew the cap. Also, check the carbon brush in the center of the cap to make sure it is free to move and stands proud of its holder and check for any signs of cracks or black 'tracking' lines running down the inside of the cap which would also necessitate renewal. Inspect the rotor arm for security and deterioration. Refit the cap upon completion and also reattach the components removed for access to the HT leads.
