Volvo S70 Ignition Coil

The Volvo S70 Ignition Coil converts the twelve-volt battery feed in the car into the tens of thousands of volts required to initiate each spark plug, allowing fuel to burn at the appropriate time. Each coil consists of two copper windings around an iron core, a thick primary winding that creates a magnetic field and a thin secondary winding that captures the field collapse and amplifies the voltage to about 15,000 to 40,000 volts, which is then delivered to the plugs by a high-tension tower. Early Volvo models were forced to use a single coil that carried power through a distributor and long plug wires; hence, failure of the coil would instantly prevent the engine from starting at all. Subsequent automobiles adopted distributorless packs that had multiple coils in a waste-spark system that fired matched pairs of cylinders each crankshaft step to cut wiring and increase the reliability of these Volvo coils. The new Volvo models switched to either coil-on-plug or coil-near-plug systems, with each cylinder having a dedicated Ignition Coil, and the distributor was completely eliminated, further refining the timing of the spark energy. Whether it be in the style or not, the Ignition Coil may fail due to heat, vibration, corroded wires or improperly wide plug gaps, leading to rough idle, misfires, poor mileage and a dashboard warning light. The S70 allows owners to identify trouble by comparing the coil resistance to specifications with a meter or by observing the trend on a scope, and to then replace just the bad component to regain smooth operation.

Volvo S70 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to disconnect and inspect the ignition coil and power stage assembly on Volvo S70?
    A:
Disconnect the battery negative lead and then the HT king lead at the center of the coil and the wiring connector from the ignition power stage just beneath the coil. Undo the bolts holding the coil and power stage mounting bracket to the side of the suspension strut tower and remove the assembly from the engine compartment, remembering that the ignition coil and power stage are an integral assembly and cannot be separated. Inspect coil visually for cracks, leakage of insulating oil or other apparent damage and renew if such damage is apparent. Refitting is a reverse of removal.
