How are Windshield Wiper Motors removed and inspected on Volvo 245?

The tailgate window wiper has a single speed permanent magnet electric motor which is connected to the wiper blade by a link arm. In order to remove the wiper, it is necessary to remove the panel inside the tailgate and also unscrew the screws fixing the reinforcing plate under the motor, ensuring that the battery positive lead is removed first. Leads from motor terminals should be marked before removal. When the link arm is disconnected and the reinforcing plate has been moved out of the way, the motor can be removed. Dismantling and inspecting the motor and gear housing wherein all the parts are cleaned and inspected to check for wear or mechanical damage, including the testing of the armature for short circuits and breakage in the winding coils including signs of overheating suggesting that there may be some damage to the On reassembly the drive housing should be well greased and the armature shaft lightly oiled and worn brushes replaced. The wiring diagram shows the special switching and parking arrangement of the tailgate wiper switch, which has three positions: park, wiper operating and wiper and washer operating. The connection is such that battery positive is connected to the window washer and in the parking position the motor is run until a changeover contact switches from 12v positive to earth and a braking action is applied. In running positions, battery positive is connected to certain terminals and uninterrupted flow of current is ensured at times of contacts. A failure of the diode may result in hesitancy in coming out of parking position or clicks in car radio as the wiper passes through this position with possible results of the diode going open or short circuit.

How to remove and refit Windshield Wiper Motors and Wiper Linkage assembly on Volvo V40?

The first step to remove the wiper motor is to remove the wiper arms. Next, take off all fasteners and try to unclip the wiper linkage cover panel from the base of the windscreen carefully. Using a large, flat-bladed screwdriver, carefully lever the wiper linkage off the motor crank balljoint. For right-hand-drive models, for better access to the motor, remove the cover from the fuse/relay box, then undo the retaining bolts to free the box from the body. On all models, remove the motor cover and the motor wiring connector of the wiper motor. Slacken and remove the four bolts holding the motor mounting plate to the bulkhead, then manoeuvre the assembly out of the car defending the mounting rubbers for damage or deterioration. In order to separate the motor from the mounting plate, make alignment marks between the motor crank and the mounting plate, slacken and remove the motor spindle nut, prevent rotation if necessary. Remove the crank and then undo the three mounting bolts to separate the motor and mounting plate. For refitting, where necessary, refit the motor to the mounting plate and tighten the mounting bolts well. Refit the crank to the motor - aligning the marks made before removal - and tighten the spindle nut to the specified torque. Reconnect the wiring connector and run the motor a few times before fitting it back. Manoeuver motor assembly in place and tighten bolts on mounting plate. Reconnect the wiring connector to the motor and firmly clip the linkage back onto the motor crank balljoint. Finally reattach the wiper motor cover panel and the wiper arms. For the wiper linkage, after carrying out necessary operations, slacken and remove the nuts holding the wiper spindle mountings to the body, manoeuvring the linkage assembly out. Inspect the linkage assembly for wear and renew it if required. To refit, move the linkage assembly into position and refit retaining nuts, making sure that the spindle mountings are correctly positioned before tightening the nuts to the specified torque setting. Securely clip the linkage back onto the motor, crank balljoint then refit the wiper motor cover panel and wiper arms.

The first step to remove the wiper motor is to remove the wiper arms. Next, take off all fasteners and try to unclip the wiper linkage cover panel from the base of the windscreen carefully. Using a large, flat-bladed screwdriver, carefully lever the wiper linkage off the motor crank balljoint. For right-hand-drive models, for better access to the motor, remove the cover from the fuse/relay box, then undo the retaining bolts to free the box from the body. On all models, remove the motor cover and the motor wiring connector of the wiper motor. Slacken and remove the four bolts holding the motor mounting plate to the bulkhead, then manoeuvre the assembly out of the car defending the mounting rubbers for damage or deterioration. In order to separate the motor from the mounting plate, make alignment marks between the motor crank and the mounting plate, slacken and remove the motor spindle nut, prevent rotation if necessary. Remove the crank and then undo the three mounting bolts to separate the motor and mounting plate. For refitting, where necessary, refit the motor to the mounting plate and tighten the mounting bolts well. Refit the crank to the motor - aligning the marks made before removal - and tighten the spindle nut to the specified torque. Reconnect the wiring connector and run the motor a few times before fitting it back. Manoeuver motor assembly in place and tighten bolts on mounting plate. Reconnect the wiring connector to the motor and firmly clip the linkage back onto the motor crank balljoint. Finally reattach the wiper motor cover panel and the wiper arms. For the wiper linkage, after carrying out necessary operations, slacken and remove the nuts holding the wiper spindle mountings to the body, manoeuvring the linkage assembly out. Inspect the linkage assembly for wear and renew it if required. To refit, move the linkage assembly into position and refit retaining nuts, making sure that the spindle mountings are correctly positioned before tightening the nuts to the specified torque setting. Securely clip the linkage back onto the motor, crank balljoint then refit the wiper motor cover panel and wiper arms.
