Volvo V50 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the timing belt and oil pump for 2.0 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine on Volvo V50?
    A:
To remove the timing belt, slip off the crankshaft sprocket and recover the crankshaft key, then remove the sump. Remove the front cover and crankshaft seal by undoing the retaining bolts and taking note of the varying lengths of the bolts in the cover. Next, undo the bolt holding the oil level pipe in place and remove the key you used to undo the crankshaft sprocket. Undo the pump mounting bolts and slide the pump, chain, and crankshaft sprocket off the engine and recover the O-ring between the sprocket and crankshaft. For inspection, remove the cover from the oil pump, making note of the location of any identification marks on the rotors. Unscrew the plug to remove the pressure relief valve, spring and plunger and clean and examine their condition. Although no specifications for the pump's internal components are given, check the general condition of the oil pump, especially the mating face to the cylinder block as significant damage may result in oil loss. Inspect the rotors for wear or damage, which means the pump must be replaced as a complete unit. Lubricate the rotors with fresh engine oil and refit them, making sure the identification marks are in the right position. If the oil pump has been removed during a major engine overhaul, it is advisable to ensure that a new or reconditioned oil pump is fitted, particularly if the engine has a high mileage or there are concerns about the condition of the old oil pump. For refitting be sure to clean the mating faces on the pump and engine block, fit the O-ring to the crankshaft, engage the drive chain with the oil pump and crankshaft sprockets, and slide the crankshaft sprocket into position while refitting the oil pump. Refit the mounting bolts, tightening them to the specified torque, making note of the fact that the front left-hand bolt has a longer length. Apply a 3mm wide bead of sealant to the oil seal carrier flange, refit the cover and tighten the bolts within 4 minutes of applying the sealant. Fit the cover with a new oil seal, re-secure the bolt for the oil level pipe, and finish the refitting procedure by reversing the steps used for removal, be sure to fit a new oil filter element and add new engine oil.
