To change the right-hand seal, first remove the
Timing Belt and lower the engine a bit to reach the crankshaft pulley. Holding the crankshaft pulley stationary, loosen the center retaining nut while keeping the tool holding the crankshaft secure - If no Volvo holding tool 999 5433 is available, create one using a camshaft sprocket holding tool. Remove the four bolts holding the crankshaft pulley in place, and attach the tool using two of the bolts, and remove the pulley center retaining nut. Place the pulley aside and use a universal puller to pull the sprocket off the crankshaft, just making sure not to damage the sprocket teeth. Carefully remove the old oil seal without damaging the oil pump housing or the crankshaft or use self-tapping screws to remove the old oil seal. Clean the oil seal location and check the crankshaft for wear. Lubricate housing, crankshaft and new seal then fit seal with lips inwards using tube to tap into place until flush. Refit the crankshaft sprocket and pulley, making sure of its proper alignment with the master spline and, finally, replace the timing belt. For the left hand seal, remove the
Flywheel or driveplate and then very carefully remove the old oil seal without damaging mating surfaces. Inspect the crankshaft for wear and thoroughly clean the area to prevent leaks. Lubricate the housing, crankshaft and new seal with clean engine oil, fit the seal, with lips inwards, and tap it in place until flush and of uniform depth. Refit the flywheel or driveplate to complete the process.
