New copper washers should be procured for the pump mounting bolts during reassembly because revised filamentary models might not have any washers upon dismantling. To remove the pump, first remove the timing belt and lower the engine slightly so that it can be accessed along the crankshaft sprocket. Remove the bolts that hold the engine speed sensor in place and carefully remove the engine speed sensor and back plate. The crankshaft sprocket can be slid off, which recovers the alignment key if it is loose. Next, remove the screw holding the cover plate behind the timing belt tensioner, the alternator and the wiring for the
Oil Pressure Switch near the oil filter. The sump should be removed and the five bolts holding the oil pump to the cylinder block undone, taking note of the position of each of the bolts, as well as recovering any copper washers. Carefully remove the pump assembly and thoroughly clean the mating faces. For inspection purposes, remove the screws that secure the gear cover to the pump body and remove the gasket. Mark the oil pump gears and remove them, unscrew the plug with pressure relief valve spring and collect the piston. Prise out the crankshaft right hand oil seal and examine all parts for wear and damage, replacing the relief valve spring if needed. Refit the gears and check for clearance with feeler blades and lubricate the gears and relief valve piston and spring and secure the cover with a new gasket. Fit a new crankshaft right hand oil seal with lips facing inwards. For refitting, be sure to keep the mating surfaces clean and dry, applying a 3mm diameter bead of sealant to the oil pump before quickly fitting it. Lightly oil the nose of the crankshaft to avoid damage during the installation process. Refit the pump square with the new copper washers on the retaining bolts and draw the pump into position with the crankshaft pulley bolt and sprocket, taking no care to turn the crankshaft. Tighten the retaining bolts diagonally and fit the sump and reconnect the oil pressure switch wiring, the alternator and cover plate. Finally, reinstall the engine speed sensor plate, crankshaft sprocket, engine speed sensor and timing belt.
