For this procedure, Volvo special tools 999 5451, 999 5452, 999 5453 and 999 5454 are required to lock the camshafts in position during refitting and to pull the upper section into place, details for making home-made alternatives are given. A tube of liquid gasket and a short-haired application roller are also required. Begin by disconnecting the negative lead of the battery, draining the cooling system and removing the spark plugs. Remove the
Timing Belt and the VVT control valve, if applicable. Disconnect the brake servo vacuum hose, unscrew the fuel pipe support bracket, remove the sealing cap on the cylinder head to expose the inlet camshaft. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor wiring, release the wiring harness guide and remove the camshaft position sensor housing and sensor trigger wheel. Ensure that the camshaft slots are parallel to the join between the upper and lower cylinder head sections and then lock them in position using the appropriate tool. Check the crankshaft sprocket timing marks Remove the camshaft sprockets Remove the wiring harness guide and ignition coils. In a progressive diagonal sequence remove all bolts holding the top section to it, tap or prise gently off and lift it squarely off the cylinder head being careful of the camshafts. Withdraw the sealing O-rings from the areas of the spark plugs and get new ones for reassembling. Mark the camshafts and remove them with the oil seals, marking the positions they are fitted and remove oil seals, preparing new ones for reassembly. Store the hydraulic tappets in a suitable oil-tight container, marking the position of the tappet. Inspect cam lobes and bearing journals for wear and the tappets for damage and renew as required. Clean the mating surfaces of the upper and lower sections of the cylinder head thoroughly, making sure there is no oil or grease in the way. For reassembly, install camshafts in the upper section with special tools, then install this assembly to the lower section and clamp against valve springs and bolt down. Oil the tappet bores and camshaft bearings, put in the tappets and make sure the mating faces are clean. Apply an even coating of liquid gasket to the mating face on the upper portion, lubricate the camshaft journals and position the camshafts correctly locking them in position. Put new sealing O-rings in the bottom part and pull up the top part and using pull-down tools fix it. Tighten the retaining bolts in progressive diagonal order, remove the pull down tool, lubricate and install the new oil seals. Perform the rest of the operations and top up the cooling system.
