To remove the thermostat, disconnect the battery negative lead and drain the cooling system. Next, slacken and remove the retaining screws, to remove the cover on the top of the engine, specifically at the front, in the case of GDI models. Then, loosen the hose clip and disconnect the coolant hose from the thermostat cover, which applies to non-GDI engines and GDeIngine. Unscrew the retaining bolts to remove the thermostat housing cover, and pull out the thermostat along with the sealing ring, discard the old sealing ring for a new one during refitting. For testing purposes, a rough test can be performed by hanging the thermostat in boiling water, it should open by the time it boils, otherwise, it needs to be replaced. If a thermometer is available, the exact opening temperature can be tested against the specifications which should also be marked on the thermostat. A thermostat that does not close as the water cools needs to be replaced as well. For refitting, put the new sealing ring back on the thermostat and seat it properly on its housing. Reinstall the thermostat housing cover and thread the retaining bolts to the correct torque. Securely reconnect the coolant hose and replace the engine cover and then refill the cooling system and reconnect the battery.
