Volvo V40 Thermostat

Volvo V40 Thermostat is a system that keeps the engine and cabin temperatures within a healthy range, ensuring that the car remains able to maintain steady performance and comfort for the drivers. The engine Thermostat is located near the radiator. It is a closed-loop Thermostat controller that senses the heat of the coolant and either opens or closes the line to the radiator until the motor is within the optimum range, and then maintains the optimum temperature to produce maximum power. The initial generations were based only on simple mechanical designs that utilized a bimetal strip or a wax pellet that expands once the coolant warms, which is a low-tech process that reacts fast and does not require electricity. Gradually, Volvo included cabin-oriented units, as in RV climate systems, where the occupants could choose their preferred air temperature. The drivers would at first rotate a simple analogue dial, then move to more informative digital non-programmable displays, and ultimately have access to programmable displays able to retain their preferred settings even when the battery is not connected. The new communicating style allows a phone or steering wheel switch to adjust the climate of any seat. Although there are these different styles, Thermostats all adhere to the same objective, which is either to turn heating or cooling equipment on or off at certain times or to turn on or off coolant flow at specific points when it is required. This middle ground prevents overheated Volvo engines, contributes to a long Volvo service life and also makes each V40 a better fuel miser.

Volvo V40 Thermostat Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace a thermostat on Volvo V40?
    A:
To remove the thermostat, disconnect the battery negative lead and drain the cooling system. Next, slacken and remove the retaining screws, to remove the cover on the top of the engine, specifically at the front, in the case of GDI models. Then, loosen the hose clip and disconnect the coolant hose from the thermostat cover, which applies to non-GDI engines and GDeIngine. Unscrew the retaining bolts to remove the thermostat housing cover, and pull out the thermostat along with the sealing ring, discard the old sealing ring for a new one during refitting. For testing purposes, a rough test can be performed by hanging the thermostat in boiling water, it should open by the time it boils, otherwise, it needs to be replaced. If a thermometer is available, the exact opening temperature can be tested against the specifications which should also be marked on the thermostat. A thermostat that does not close as the water cools needs to be replaced as well. For refitting, put the new sealing ring back on the thermostat and seat it properly on its housing. Reinstall the thermostat housing cover and thread the retaining bolts to the correct torque. Securely reconnect the coolant hose and replace the engine cover and then refill the cooling system and reconnect the battery.
