How to remove and install a Cooling Fan Assembly on a belt-driven type fan on Volvo 740?

To remove and install the belt-driven type fan, first remove the negative battery cable then remove the top section of the tan shroud if applicable. Loosen the adjusting bolts to slacken the drive belts followed by remove the tan mounting bolts and fan assembly. For installation, the engine fan should be placed back, the tan mounting bolts should be tightened, the drive belt(s) should be adjusted to the specified tension, the top half of the fan shroud should be reinstalled if removed, and the negative battery cable should be reconnected. For models with electric cooling fans, the fan is operated by a thermocontact or thermal switch, usually kicking in when coolant temperatures reach between 190-212deg F. (88-100degC). B6304F engines have a fully electric radiator fan which is controlled by a relay reacting to temperature conditions or pressure switches in the A/C circuit, the relay being mounted in front of the battery. For models without 850/C70/S70/V70, disconnect both battery cables, remove the battery holder if required and disconnect the harness connector on the crossmember. Undo the relay and take off the ground lead and then the tan shroud if necessary, then the cooling fan mounting bolts to remove the fan assembly. For installation, put the fan assembly back, tighten the mounting bolts, reinstall the fan shroud, reconnect the ground lead and relay connector, attach the cross member connector, reinstall the battery holder, reconnect the battery cables, and start the engine and check the cooling fan operation. For 850/C70/S70/V70 models, remove the negative battery cable, remove the retaining bolts on the relay holder from the radiator, remove the control module and air intake hoses, and remove the four tan mounting bolts. Pull the fan up, unplug the relay and tan connectors and remove the tan from the vehicle. To install, put the fan back in the engine compartment, attach the relay and connectors, tighten the retaining bolts, reinstall the air hoses and secure the relay holder and reconnect the negative battery cable.

How is the Cooling Fan Assembly controlled and what steps should be taken if it is not functioning properly on Volvo V40?

The cooling fan is regulated by the engine management ECU via the cooling fan relay, based on input from the coolant temperature sensor, and possibly the air conditioning system pressure switch. If a fan is not operating when the engine is running fine, the problem may be with the cooling fan relay or motor. A bad ECU or temperature sensor will usually cause a rough running engine and may cause the engine management light to illuminate. To check the motor, unplug the wiring connector and use a 12 volt supply directly. For the cooling fan relay replacement with a known working relay is recommended. For non-turbo models, disconnect the battery negative terminal and then disconnect the wiring connector from the fan motor and unclip the wiring/hoses from the fan shroud. If necessary, jack up the front of the car to get access, remove the engine/transmission undershield and unbolt the fan shroud off of the radiator, then maneuvering the fan assembly out. For models with air conditioning, unbolt the fan assembly from the radiator, remove the radiator and then pull out the cooling fan. Disconnecting wiring connector and unbolting fan shroud from the radiator as the auxiliary cooling fan requires. For turbo models support the engine/transmission with a hoist, remove headlight access covers, disconnect hoses and wiring and then remove the fan assembly ensuring correct reassembly and torque upon refitting.

The cooling fan is regulated by the engine management ECU via the cooling fan relay, based on input from the coolant temperature sensor, and possibly the air conditioning system pressure switch. If a fan is not operating when the engine is running fine, the problem may be with the cooling fan relay or motor. A bad ECU or temperature sensor will usually cause a rough running engine and may cause the engine management light to illuminate. To check the motor, unplug the wiring connector and use a 12 volt supply directly. For the cooling fan relay replacement with a known working relay is recommended. For non-turbo models, disconnect the battery negative terminal and then disconnect the wiring connector from the fan motor and unclip the wiring/hoses from the fan shroud. If necessary, jack up the front of the car to get access, remove the engine/transmission undershield and unbolt the fan shroud off of the radiator, then maneuvering the fan assembly out. For models with air conditioning, unbolt the fan assembly from the radiator, remove the radiator and then pull out the cooling fan. Disconnecting wiring connector and unbolting fan shroud from the radiator as the auxiliary cooling fan requires. For turbo models support the engine/transmission with a hoist, remove headlight access covers, disconnect hoses and wiring and then remove the fan assembly ensuring correct reassembly and torque upon refitting.
