Volvo V50 Cooling Fan Assembly Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Cooling Fan Assembly on Volvo V50?
    A:
To remove the cooling fan, start by taking off the air cleaner housing and the panel above the Radiator by undoing the retaining screws. Next, remove the air cleaner housing bracket from the bonnet slam panel and release the hoses from the retaining clips at the top of the fan shrouding. Disconnect the cooling fan wiring plug located on the top left-hand corner of the shroud. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on axle stands. If applicable, remove the engine undershield by undoing the Torx screws. Press in the clips and release the catches at the bottom of the fan shroud on each side, then lift the fan shroud upwards to disengage the locking hooks and withdraw it from under the vehicle. For 2.4 litre petrol models, remove the front bumper, drain the cooling system, and disconnect the cooling fan wiring plug. Release the hoses from the retaining clips, jack up the vehicle, and remove the engine undershield. Support the radiator with a trolley jack, undo the bolts for the radiator/fan shroud lower mounting bracket, disconnect the coolant hoses, and detach the oil cooler if applicable. Lift the fan and shroud downwards from place. For 1.6 litre diesel engines, raise the vehicle, remove the engine undershield, and drain the cooling system. Take off the air cleaner housing and the panel above the radiator, then release the plastic rivets and remove the air inlet. Move the hoses aside, disconnect the cooling fan wiring plug, and release the clamps to disconnect the coolant hoses. Finally, lift the cooling fan from its position. For 2.0 and 2.4 litre diesel engines, remove the radiator and lift the fan shroud upwards from the radiator. Refitting is the reversal of removal, and ensure to replenish the cooling system.
