Volvo V50 Water Pump

The Volvo V50 Water Pump maintains the temperature of the engine in the compact wagon at a safe level by forcing coolant through the block and to the radiator. The aluminum housing contains a pulley-driven shaft rotating on closed bearings, the impeller of which forces coolant from the lower radiator hose into the water jacket, then back into the radiator. This is the core of the cooling system of any modern Volvo and is indicative of the emphasis of the brand on reliable engineering. The majority of the previous models depend on a belt which joins the crankshaft to the mechanical Water Pump, such that flow speed increases and decreases with engine rpm. Later in the production years, some of the versions were redesigned to incorporate an electric Water Pump, which utilizes a small motor, to maintain a constant circulation during engine idle or when stopping momentarily and as such does not produce a drag on the part belt. The similarities between the mechanical unit and its electric counterpart include the main components, i.e., the shaft seal which keeps the coolant away from the bearings, and the cast body which is attached by bolts close to the thermostat unit. Previously, cast iron was the choice, but lighter aluminum is applied throughout the Volvo cooling systems because it transfers heat faster and reduces mass. Instructions are obvious, as the drips from the vent hole turn color, the bearings become loose, or the temperature indicator is on the rise due to a broken impeller, and frequent replenishment of the coolant does not allow the second V50 to suffer those hiccups and makes every Volvo engine run cool.

Volvo V50 Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the water pump on Volvo V50?
    A:
Before moving further, be sure to listen to some warnings given. Start by draining out the cooling system. For 1.8 and 2.0 litre petrol models, pull the plastic cover on the top of the engine straight up from its mountings, remove the auxiliary drivebelt and then slacken the bolts holding the water pump pulley using a strap wrench, to hold the pulley while you loosen the bolts. It is also possible to slacken the bolts in the pulley before removing the auxiliary drivebelt. Next, remove the bolts and pull the pulley from the water pump, then undo the three bolts to remove the water pump and discard the O-ring seal. For 2.4 litre petrol ones, timing belt, retaining bolts and water pump are to be removed, and the access to these components may be limited and a little engine adjustment is required. Thoroughly remove all of the old gasket from the pump and cylinder block mating faces. For 1.6 and 2.0 litre 4-cylinder diesel engines remove the timing belt and undo the bolts (seven for 1.6 litre engine, five for 2.0 litre engine) and remove the water pump from locating dowels, recovering the gasket and O-ring seal, as applicable. Clean any residue of the old gasket off the mating faces. For 5-cylinder diesel engine, open the cooling system, remove timing belt, brake vacuum pump and lower torque rod. Insert a camshaft locking tool in the aperture revealed by the removal of the vacuum pump, then undo the four bolts to remove the upper timing belt sprocket and the three bolts holding the rear timing belt cover in place. Undo the seven bolts for the water pump and slightly move the back timing belt cover forward. Support the engine from above with an engine hoist and move the engine slightly to the right, and the water pump forward a bit. Then, move the engine back to the left and remove the water pump from the locating dowels. For refitting, a new gasket and O-ring seal where applicable, to locate the pump in position, apply a little thread-locking compound and tighten the bolts in a diagonal sequence progressively to the specified torque. Finally, refit all the components as described and replenish the cooling system.
