Volvo S40 Oil Pan

The Volvo S40 Oil Pan is the reservoir that is located below the engine and plays a vital role in holding and protecting the lubricant applied in every four-cylinder and five-cylinder version. With its adoption of the shared wet sump design, the pan allows gravity to recycle spent oil into the sump and pumps it back into the pan to ensure that moving components remain covered in a protective film. The wet sump has the lubricant just under the block, hence the engine is higher, but Volvo ensured there was clearance with the tight transverse system of the sedan. The baffles are applied internally to deal with slosh during sharp lane changes and cornering, minimizing the possibility that the pump will take air rather than oil. In contrast to dry-sump systems of purpose-built race cars, which use two pumps and a separate tank, the wet sump of each of the S40 models uses a single pump and maintains a low weight. Over the years the rudimentary stamped steel design was continued and the drivers were not able to choose various designs of Volvos to compare, though the later model years had better gasket flanges to seal leaks. Should the pan crack or the seal begin to break, the oil will drip on the road and the low-level indicator on the dashboard might light up, indicating that the Volvo Oil Pan requires inspection. Periodic checking of the level and replacement of gaskets when necessary allows the Oil Pan to remain active in supplying slick and clean fluid to sustain the smooth running of any Volvo engine.

Volvo S40 Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What steps are required to remove and reassemble the oil pan with the engine and transmission installed for 1.8 and 2.0 litre petrol engines on Volvo S40?
    A:
To perform this task with the engine and transmission installed in the vehicle requires assistance of at least one person and the equipment needed to raise and support the vehicle's front high enough to allow withdrawal of the oil pan from beneath the vehicle. A support bar across the top of the engine bay is required to hold the full engine and transmission unit in place when the vehicle is raised. Start off by applying the handbrake, jacking up the front of the vehicle and supporting the vehicle on axle stands. Drain the engine oil, clean and re-fit the engine oil drain plug, tightening it to the specified torque. If the drain plug seal is damaged, a new drain plug will be required. Although not actually part of the dismantling procedure, it is advisable to remove and discard the oil filter for renewal with the oil. Support the engine by a cross-beam or hoist, and remove the timing chain cover. Unscrew and remove the oil pan to transmission bolts, progressively unscrew the oil pan retaining bolts and use a scraper to break the sealant around the oil pan, taking care not to damage the mating surfaces. Lower the oil pan and withdraw it with engine and transmission. For reassembly, thoroughly clean and de-grease the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and oil pan and wipe out the oil pan with a clean rag. Apply a 3.0 mm bead of sealant to the oil pan flange around the inside edge of the bolt holes; making sure to refit the oil pan within 10 minutes of applying the sealant. Offer up the oil pan, insert the retaining bolts but do not tighten them, and align (level) the oil pan to the cylinder block by means of a straight-edge. Tighten the retaining bolts sequentially and as tight as indicated by the specifications and refit and tighten the oil pan bolts. Refit timing chain cover, lower the car to the ground, refill engine with oil and fit new oil filter, refill the cooling system with coolant. Finally, look for indications of oil or coolant leaks after the engine has been restarted and warmed up to normal operating temperature.
  • Q: How to remove and refit the components of the engine and associated systems on the Oil Pan for 2.4 litre petrol engine on Volvo S40?
    A:
The first thing you need to do to remove the components is to slacken the right hand front roadwheel nuts and jack up the front of the vehicle and then support it securely on axle stands before removing the roadwheel. Next, undo the 7 Torx screws to remove the engine undershield yet right-hand front wheel arch liner, after which the engine oil is drained as well as the intake manifold. Undo the bolt/nut to draw the oil level dipstick guide tube from the oil pan, and (if fitted with an oil cooler) undo the four bolts holding the oil cooler to the oil pan and pull it to the rear being prepared for oil spillage. Undo the wiring plug of the oil level sensor, place a container under the power steering pump, and undo the fluid delivery and return hose from the pump and cover the opening to avoid fluid loss and pollution. Undo the bolts holding the power steering pipe bracket to the oil pan, remove the air conditioning compressor drivebelt and then undo the retaining bolts of the air conditioning compressor and hold it away from the oil pan, hanging from the radiator crossmember. Remove all the screws holding the oil pan to the engine apart from a screw in each corner which should be slackened a few turns. Gently tap the sides and ends of the oil pan until the joint releases and undo the remaining screws and remove the oil pan, discarding the 0-rings at the right hand end and getting ready for fitting new ones. For refitting, make sure the mating faces of the oil pan and engine are clean and clear of gasket residue then apply a thin layer of Volvo liquid sealant to the oil pan mating face with a short-haired roller. Put new 0-rings in and refit the oil pan with a screw in each corner, only finger tight. Insert oil pan to transmission screws and tighten to specified torque followed by oil pan to engine screws which are tightened from the transmission end. Complete the refitting by making sure the oil cooler is reattached to the oil pan with new 0-ring seals, reconnecting the power steering pipes with new seals where applicable, refitting the oil level dipstick tube with a new 0-ring seal, renewing the oil filter and filling the engine with new oil.
