Frequent oil and filter changes are very important preventative maintenance procedures for DIY owners since engine oil undergoes aging which causes it to become diluted and contaminated, which results in premature engine wear. Before beginning, gather all tools and other materials needed before starting, ensuring that you have clean rags and newspapers to help deal with any spills, warm engine oil drains easier and helps to remove any built up sludge. Apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the vehicle and support the vehicle on axle stands. If necessary, loosen the Torx screws and remove the engine undershield then remove the oil filler cap. Using a spanner or socket, break the sump drain plug loose by about half a turn, put a draining container under the plug, remove the plug, so that it can drain the oil, then remove the container again. After draining, wipe the drain plug, inspect the sealing ring for damage and replace if necessary, clean the area around the drain plug and refit the seal, tightening to the specified torque. For 1.8 and 2.0 litre models, place the container under the oil filter, using an oil filter removal tool if necessary, unscrew the filter by hand and allow the oil to drain into the container. Clean the sealing area of the engine, apply some clean engine oil to the sealing ring of a new filter and screw into position by hand. For 2.4 litre models, remove the oil filter housing cap using a 36 mm socket, discard the old oil filter O-ring seal, remove the oil filter insert, clean oil filter housing and cap and then fit a new oil filter O-ring seal lubricated with clean engine oil. Carefully insert the new filter insert into the housing, reattach the cap and tighten it to the recommended torque. For all models fill engine with correct grade and type of oil (use funnel to minimise spillage) and pour in half the specified quantity first, wait for it to settle in before adding more until dipstick reads at MIN mark. Reinstalling the dipstick and filler cap, start the engine and look for leaks around the oil filter and sump drain plug and wait for an oil pressure warning light, which may take a while. After a few minutes, turn off the engine, wait for the oil to settle, and check the dipstick level again, and add more oil if needed. Finally, recycle the engine oil and old oil filter in local recycling points.
